It’s puzzling to me too

Pleasure Travel is one of the most wasteful things you can do with money. All you get is the “experience”. With that, you get headaches with the actual travel to and fro… the juice just isn’t worth the squeeze for me.

The industry has done a good job of convincing people that life is about “experiences” and seeing different places…but that’s just marketing BS.
Experiences are nice but the memory of those experiences diminishes over time.

I believe that people that travel all time time fall into 2 categories-
-those that just like seeing new places and enjoy other cultures because they’re very outgoing. And
-Those that hate where they are and want to just get the hell away.

frick staying in one place for your entire life

There are so many cool places to see in the US that I have never been to. Theres also more to life than money. I work hard so I can play hard. Part of that playing hard is a nice 5-7 day trip and 1-2 extended weekend trips.

Have at it. Enjoy all you want.

I just don’t particularly like spending my money on vacations. I’ve travelled extensively. It’s a hassle.

More to life than money? Uh. No. Try traveling without it.

I was going to wonder the same thing in response to OP's question, and realized how much I'm traveling this year myself

Not including any work travel:
-Started the year off in January with a 1 week cruise on Icon of the Seas with family and my parents
-Hilton Head Island beach trip in May with the family and a friend
-Took family to visit both our parents in Tampa FL in June
-Family going to Greenville, SC with friends of ours to go to LSU/Clemson game (well just me and my bud) next weekend
-Wife going to Miami in a week and a half for a concert with friends
-I am going to Savannah with friends for a guys weekend and GA Southern game in November
-Family going down to Tampa to see parents again in -November/thanksgiving
-Going to Mexico all inclusive in December (just wife/I)

It's a lot more when I write it all out, but nothing too long/extravagant in there outside the cruise to start the year. All in all it's only about $7k-$8k in travel expenses for us, luckily the cruise itself was free (insane prices on these new ships, was like 7 grand for the cabin).

We just got 5 free IHG nights (up 60k points each) with the IHG Premier C.C. to use for next year which is nice. Only a $99AF card. Was effectively a 300k point sign up bonus if you redeem for all 60k nights. They also offer every 3rd night in a row booked with points a 4th night for free which is pretty awesome.

LOL
Big expensive homes, overpriced vehicles, lots of eating out at restaurants are all much worse of a waste of money.

And that’s fine.

What do you enjoy spending your money on? If I didn’t travel and do a nice trip I would be deep sea fishing every quarter or something along those lines.

I didn’t come from much. I didn’t leave the greater Mason-Dixon region until I was a 20 something.

After marriage; we had a few breaks go our way and really started traveling as a 30 somethings. First domestic and increasingly foreign.

We’ve made a point of exposing our kids to international travel. We believe it leads to a greater understanding of how the world works and better global perspective. So we do prioritize it. Often at the expense of other things like fancy clothes, fine dining, etc. my daughter turns 18 next month and has visited 20 countries.

We do use sites like Going.com to find deals. Often letting the best deals determine where we actually go.

Agree with many others. There’s a lot of people who are deeply in debt and globetrotting at the same time. Not sure what implications that will have in the future.

Not

Homes have value and can be used for shelter. They can be used to rent to others. They can be sold for money. They usually appreciate in value too.

Vehicles lose value but can be sold for money. If you buy well, you can hold onto a vehicle for 10+ years. You can also use them to get around. Overpriced vehicles are generally a bad idea but even overpriced vehicles can be utilized for transportation and can be sold for money.

Eating out is a waste to money. No question. Do you eat out when you travel?

A vacation is just fluff. You literally get nothing in return except a memory and that fades.
