We stopped the new car frenzy a couple of years ago- People are nuts- you can find great cars that are 1-3 years old with less than 20K on them. My last buy - I looked at 4 vehicles all similar with miles from 7K -1B

All showroom condition

My son just picked up one with 5K- I knew the sales person personally- car belonged to a client of his that trades every year.

Bought the wife a top of line SUV $60K sticker 14k miles

Previous owner traded - said they thought it was too big and purchased a smaller suv

I bought my wife a 2017 Yukon with 100k mile warranty a few months ago. We financed $55,000 for 60 months. Sale price was $69,000 minus $17,000 down payment. Car payment is $1,193 + $167 for insurance. We are paying $1,360 a month for her Yukon but it does ride nice on the highway.

Holy shite man. My wife and I make 5x what y'all do and I just bought a new truck and we have 5 payments left on the wife's Pilot. Our combined payments are $800.

This is the kicker. 2 new cars with roughly 300 each per month note? Very nice.

Not hard to do with a car. SUV's and trucks are just ridiculously priced. Use the savings and get a luxury car.

Yup... wife wanted either a Highlander or a Pilot. When we actually sat down and ran the numbers, she decided she was perfectly happy with a Camry.

The step up in price to an SUV is insane.

OK... so you are making more than 50K.

I could do the calculation but I'm lazy today... what's your interest rate?

As far as the salesman looking out for you if you trade in... fat chance. If he was looking out for you... he would never have sold you that vehicle in the first place.

Not just directed at you... but people ask how are people affording these vehicles? The salesman never discusses the sticker... it's all about the monthly pay.

It depends on how many options you have to have. I just bought a new F150 for under 35k. I don't need heated seats and automatic side steps and all of that fluff in a truck.

yeah but $35k for a pretty "bare bones" truck is still insane

when i was coming up a basic dodge Ram (i know they sucked, but still) was like $15k

that's an insane jump in 15 yers

It's not bare bones at all. V8 upgrade, power seats, spray in bed liner, touch screen radio, side steps. It's just not loaded like most people seem to have to have now. My last truck was a similarly equipped 09 Ram and I think I paid 29k for it in 08

We drive a VW Golf

I’m on my second Golf (both purchased new), and I feel like it’s the size/cargo capacity that is useful for a vast majority of US households. But folks have swallowed the SUV kool-aid, convincing themselves that they “Need” a crossover SUV (at a hefty markup because of popularity) for one reason or another. A compact hatchback like the Golf often has cargo capacity equal (or even slightly greater) than many compact SUVs or crossovers. Plus, great gas mileage compared to their bloated SUV brethren and pretty modest pricing..

As for the truck/Tahoe/Suburban, unless you are regularly towing a large boat, they’re just a showy bit of conspicuous consumption, IMHO.

A brand new GTI cost me $24K. I can fit my entire farmer’s market pop up in the back, including 10’ canopy, two 8’ folding tables, 2 folding chairs, and everything I sell, and still have room for a passenger. I average 32 mpg combined city/hwy, and I can do a 14.5 second 1/4 mile. Those cars have turned me into a hatchback evangelist. And boy, is it WAY more fun to drive a GTI than a Tahoe.

ETA: At various times, my GTI has hauled concrete blocks, sheets of plywood, 4 round bales of pine straw, eight sacks of ready-mix concrete, 300 lbs of pottery clay, and half of a fat steer (butchered & vac sealed) in two 120 quart and two 100 quart Igloo coolers)....in short, I use it like a truck all the time. I did resort to borrowing my nephew’s pickup when I needed to haul a yard and a half of compost last week. I didn’t think compost would wash out of my cargo liner, LOL.

We have been looking at a Tahoe/Silverado/Tundra.

These trucks/SUVs are $50-70K. The particular Tahoe I would like is about 63K.

I’m having a hard time fathoming how the average family is affording a 50K truck nowadays.

I was at a hotel in Durham, NC about 6 weeks ago going to a dog trial and walked the dogs through some Jacobson Toyota dealerships up the street at night. No shite, a 2018 TRD Pro Tacoma was priced at almost $50k and same line Tundra was over $57k. They did have a sweet chrome/black Pro 4Runner, but who pays $48k for that to drive on the road much less for rock crawling/off road use?

Here in ATL there are sales at times on different lines of F-150's with 12k - $16k off which is the only thing that would begin to pique my interest. I ended up trading in my Ford last week for an AWD Honda Pilot and got a good deal. The cost is like a drop in the bucket compared to our liquid net worth, but the current prices of vehicles just makes me cringe and many have shitty electronics/infotainment systems. I was going to write a check but the financing they offered was too good to walk from, sub-1.00%.

I make a pretty damned good salary on the books. I have three older 4x4s and a fuel efficient shite box.

I can't imagine spending 400 a month on a vehicle much less 900.

My tundra was $43k, leather interior, all the bells and whistles.

Not sure where you got 50-70k

Also, you'd be surprised what you can afford when you're single and don't have kids dragging you down.

I bet people hide from her when they see her in a store.

You see almost all new vehicles on the road today, and I know people whose cars cost more than their homes. It's insane.

I think most people work to a monthly payment and pay no attention to actual vehicle cost, which I guess is good for dealers/financiers/ manufacturers.

63k Tahoe isn't bad if you're trading in a 35k Tahoe on it.....which is probably a 4 year old vehicle.

Just leased my wife a Lexus ES350 3 days ago. She sells real estate. Not the base model but a,step up. We added the tire insurance package. Paid 3K down on a 3 year lease at 15K miles a year. $489 note

Is this some sort of weird brag? Or are you admitting to being dumb?
