My husband and I are both self employed.

Blue Cross/Blue Shield is what insurance we've had since 1997. Premiums are going from $1150 to almost $1300 per month. It is a high ded plan w/ HSA; ded is $5600 per family; $10K out of pocket.

We're needing other options.

I'm 52; he's 51. He's got hypertension and thyroid issues
I'm on a statin and thyroid meds as well.
Two kids still on our plan .. one is 20 and the other will be off soon as he's getting married in January.

Does anyone have any advice/information/plans that they can offer details about?

We can change deductible on this but it's a grandfathered policy and we're afraid premiums would only go up.
Thanks.

I always get downvoted when I talk about insurance on here

When I was paying for my own insurance someone suggested Christian insurance and I looked at it but didn’t end up getting it but it sounds based and it’s a lot cheaper

Basically you save money because they don’t pay for sinners like they won’t pay for you to go to rehab or have a bastard kid or whatever I think you gotta be married or single with no kids to apply

You're going to have to shop the ACA. You're probably going to get raped, though, honestly. It's insane how contractors/self employed folks get hosed on insurance premiums. Health insurance is literally the only reason I'm a full time W2 employee.

I'm no expert and don't even fully understand it but I was proposed a reference based insurance plan as one of my options earlier in the year and looked into it. I ended up going a more conventional route due to having difficulties getting many employees to understand and get on board...

With that being said, I spoke to two different business owners in my area whom had a small amount of employees and were usually all partners (less than 5) and they enjoyed it and said it works well.

Take it for what it is worth, but maybe something worth looking into? Good luck.

Thanks guys.

If the ACA rapes me, can it be as bad as we already are? I’m thinking worse.

As I said, I’m 52. I don’t want to go to work full time but maybe I will for insurance purposes.

I have nothing to really add, but:

Wow, every day I thank God I have a W2 job. That is absolutely insane.

I pay $76/mo for a $4k deductible HDHP plan through work where they contribute $500/yr into my HSA as well.

My wife's is $140/mo for a $1.5k deductible plan through her work.

Both our dental and vision is less then $20/mo combined (each) as well.

I cant imagine paying $1,300/mo for just health insurance. Even if we added kids to our plan it would only be a few hundred a month more.

I feel your pain. I work for a small company with less than 10 employees. Boss pays for half of my premium but I have to cover wife and three kids. Blue cross blue shield of LA is $1550 per month with an additional $250 per month dental/Vision policy. I am paying more in health insurance than ever it’s sickening. Add up vehicle a d home and I am nocking on $30,000 a year in insurance premiums.

I did Healthcare.gov when I changed jobs (small company & everyone else covered by spouse)
It’s was 500.00 a month with a high deductible (over 5K)

Last year I tried to shop BCBS on my own, they sent me to a broker I guess
Did what I thought was my due diligence double checking my Dr was covered & my meds were covered

What he didn’t catch was my Dr sees me for mental health
So it’s not covered & that means meds aren’t either
What I just discovered is that none of this goes towards my deductible either
So far this year I have paid over 1600 in prescriptions (I take 2 pills daily)

Instead of 500 a month with some coverage I’m paying 350 a month with no coverage but if I get in an accident at least I have insurance (after 7500 deductible)

I looked into the Christian insurance, it’s a cost sharing program & seems like a lot of paperwork

If you have a good plan I’d stay with it unless it gets absolutely unaffordable

I’ve only done group plans my whole career, so not sure what’s available for you. But, something that my broker threw at us as an option is BCBS Blue Saver. Company is in the NOLA area, so that means you need to treat within the Ochsner system, anything outside of that (other than emergency) would be out of network. The costs are significantly less, so may be something worth looking into.

Pretty sure blue saver is available here too but I’m in the position of changes kick us into Obamacare.

I guess I need to look at it.

This just sucks.

My friend has their family on the Christian insurance
Cant smoke
If you aren’t married you can’t have another adult in the household that’s not related
Pretty sure it doesn’t cover their kids vaccinations
IIRC they pay a yearly fee to Walgreens to get meds cheaper, don’t know what the program is called
They basically say they don’t have insurance & pay cash price for any Dr visits

I recommend, if you haven’t already, talk to a BCBS rep- they saved us (both self employed, 2 young kids) a bundle by getting us an ‘off market’ plan. We did that for several years before we got a group plan, which helped save some. This year, our small businesses have done so poorly, we qualified for the stipend for health insurance through ACA, but I’m not 100% sure it’s going to carry forward past 2021, so we’ll see.

Bottom line is make an appointment with a BCBS business insurance rep and see if there are other options for you and your spouse.

This sucks to hear. Is it fair to say that both businesses are retail or restaurant related? Covid has wrecked so many businesses.

This is what's kind of fricked about the ACA. I'm glad that you could find affordable coverage, but basically if you're not doing poorly, it's expensive af.

Regardless of where you fall politically I think it's safe to say our healthcare system is pretty fricked in a lot of ways. The insurance carriers will bend over backwards to not cover your medical needs.

Custom vinyl/embroidery shop (out of our home, thankfully- little/no overhead) and paint studio, which was shut down because we're a 'bar' since we sell beer/wine

I'm in a sharing ministry.

Can't smoke is correct.

You'll generally need Good Rx or prescriptions, and Dr visits are out of pocket. Mainly kicks in for major expenses - you pay routine costs and the ministry covers large bills. I have a deductible of $1k per incident.

You might want to look into them. If it turns out to not be for you, only loss was your time.

This is how insurance SHOULD work. Like, I pay for routine shite, and insurance pays for disastrous shite. Not the other way around.

Yes ... it should. We pay up to $5600 .. I have no issue with that. BUT to pay the premium we do to THEN meet a $5600 ded sucks. last year however, acl/mcl repair for my husband and surgery on our son's hand 3 weeks later .. they never questioned a claim. But Lord have mercy ..

My daughter turned 26 this year and unfortunately has not been able to get a job that has insurance. I signed her up for the Cobra option to continue my company's insurance plan. It is about $650 a month, but good coverage. I pay it for her and have considered shopping around, but keep hoping she gets a better job with insurance benefits.
