My job may be going fully remote and I’m considering moving out of Louisiana. I’m hoping to hear from others that were in a similar situation.

Where should I move to? Here are some details of our situation…

- Wife works in healthcare (part time)
- 2 kids in elementary, 1 just started HS
- Gross income ~$200k
- House is nearly paid off (could sell for around $220-250)
- Both sets of parents currently live in the same town as us (this would be tough to get over - but feel it may be necessary to break the cycle of staying in LA).
- Very tight friend groups, but, those we are closest to have also moved away in the past several years.

Considerations for where we’d move to:

- Reasonable cost of living
- Good public schools
- Descent airport within an hours drive
- Good, reliable internet (for job)
- We enjoy the outdoors… hiking, camping, kayaking, fishing.
- Close to a year-round kids swim club

That's rough pulling your kid out of their high school after freshman year.

I mean they'll survive and people do it all the time, but that would be a consideration if it were me.

Pics or her online profile name?

You’ve got a real dilemma there with extended family involved.

I purposefully didn’t move while my kids were in school.

Utah, Idaho, or rural or suburban upper Midwest would be on the shortlist if I had a do-over.

Possibly rural Vermont or New Hampshire.

There’s a lot to be said for getting out of Louisiana with kids, and you and the wife can put down roots better somewhere else if you start sooner than later.

Good luck, I don’t envy your decision.

How is the housing market here? Public schools?

Given mine is almost paid off, I’m assuming I’ll have to spend around $350k to find anything in a nice area and carry a sizable mortgage.

Haven't looked but I would assume 350k aint getting you much for a family of 5 trying to live in a desirable area with top notch public schools.

Maybe it does, or maybe you can find somewhere you can buy that's a little further out from the main population center. I just would be surprised if you can find a nice crib big enough for your family in a non shitty area at that price in 2023.

Just be aware that fully remote can change at any time, especially if there is a change at the head of the company.

Just ask the workers at Farmers.

Would be my choices… trying to keep it close to Louisiana so you can still get close to parents when need be.

I don’t think the public schools are great in Chattanooga but you can live 20 minutes outside of town and there are some great public schools

Have you considered Pensacola?

Cheaper than destin, but still great beach/outdoor access without income tax and a short drive back to LA.

Good luck. Been trying to convince my wife for years. Grandparents even say they’ll follow

I would second the Fayetteville/Bentonville area of Arkansas. Beautiful nature and Wal Mart pumps in enough money to keep it looking nice.

Sounds like you just need to move to the Northshore.

Moving out of LA will be the best decision you've ever made.
