Something like 85% of all trades in the stock market are done by automated trading software based on certain algorithms and they happen in fractions of a second. Do we have any day traders here and does the regular guy stand a chance in the market?

Regular guy? No.

Congress person with classified briefings and a cell phone? Whips those computers every time.

Nope

For more than just speed reasons too. The price you get isn’t as good as the price the bots get.

The book Flash Boys covers this extensively, by Michael Lewis (also wrote moneyball and the big short)

I thought all those people running around on csnbc when they ring the bell and all were day traders. The ones frantically looking at all those computers, what are they?

I think with most trading platforms you have to maintain a higher balance 25k+ to be allowed to day trade

yes you can make money if you make it your job. Plenty of people do it. if you treat it like sports gambling though you will lose

there are two proven ways to make money in the market:

1) buy the indexes on a regular basis and never look at them

2) learn options premium (and how/why they move) and day trade options

also…most importantly
“day trading” does not mean you trade every day. It means you only hold your positions during trading hours. You get in, and get out

and you’d better have an appetite for paying taxes

On the Robinhood trading app, they won’t even let you daytrade unless you put in like 20k in your account.

If putting in $20k to a trading platform gives you pause, you don't need to be day trading. I'm surprised it is that low.

Under 20k in your account isn't day trading as an income stream it is a hobby.

Check out r/problemgambling. It’s supposed to just be a subreddit for people with casino/sportsbook problems, but over the past few years it’s become 50/50 with people who have lost everything in stock or crypto futures trading

You can use an all cash account to get around that. However people that have under that aren’t serious anyway with it.

You will never beat the computers.

My advice is to get into margin trading with all your money and hit up the crypto exchange. Might as well go out with a bang

"Day traders" is just a fancy term for people who gamble and go broke playing the stock market.

"Hedge Funds" mostly use computer algos to trade these days. I am sure personal knowledge trades still happen thanks to "insider knowledge".

But the average joe over any decent amount of time was going to lose big time money, trying to day trade. As with most "professional traders" as well.

History has shown to stick with low cost indexing unless you have a lot of capital to play with.
