Any attorneys or someone that has recently had a will done have any idea how much a will in Louisiana should cost to have done? I know a lot depends on complexity, but I am asking about a standard will for a husband and wife (2 children) with nothing complicated.

If you want a well done one that covers just about everything including trusts and everything, it was about $3k for mine but I have a legal plan through my work so it was no additional cost to me.

I normally charge $250 for just a basic, straightforward will. It'll cost more the more complicated it gets, obviously. And if you're a husband and wife that both need one, I give a discount to do both, assuming most of all your information is the same regarding kids, assets, etc.

ETA to Admins: I'm not trying to solicit business if that's against TD rules . Just giving OP an idea of what it'll cost

I just finished mine and haven't received the final bill but I'm roughly $1700 in and would expect another $500-600 on the final bill (hopefully). Mine was reasonably complicated with children from previous relationships but not super crazy complicated.

I used to do them occasionally. I charged $350 for basic simple wills... BUT I would include this badass looking folder.

Is it more difficult if you have a child with special needs? (Son has Down syndrome)

We are starting to think about having ours done as he gets older.

It will be more complicated, yes.

As with anything, you get what you pay for. I highly recommend going to an attorney that focuses on estate planning vs. someone who does whatever comes in the door. I see quite a bit of work from other attorneys that is just garbage.

Maybe there's a rock solid family structure surrounding him if you get hit by a bus, but I wouldn't put off getting a will done ASAP. And I would get a shite load of life insurance. And set up a trust with some life ins. money for whoever becomes his guardian (God forbid).

Yes, it will be more complicated. Louisiana has a regime called forced heirship that would presumably apply to your child with Downs. Here is link to a blog if you're interested: LINK

If I were you, I would look for an attorney certified in estate planning or one who specifically does special needs trusts. I see you're in North Louisiana, but I know a guy who does this type of work in Lafayette if you'd like his name.

Can someone do it themselves with a site like-

Or is that too risky?

I do this work for a living. Never do these documents on your own. Just pay the $600-$1,000 for a basic estate plan (will, advance directives, power of attorney, etc.). Well worth the money. Make sure you go to someone who doesn't just do this work on the side. I can give you a phone number for someone I know in Metarie that does great work. He's a JD, CPA, LLM -- brilliant dude and does only estate planning.

Would like his number, thanks. What are the risks of doing it yourself? Am I naive to think that unless it is contested, it is really a non-issue?

The risk of doing it yourself is that it won’t comport to strict form requirements in Louisiana and it will be null and void.

You’ll be dead and your stuff will flow through the laws of intestacy.
