I fear my old car is about to join that big lot in the sky. I know car prices exploded during Covid and interest rates are through the roof. Are their still reasonably reliable, affordable vehicles for purchase?

If you have time to be patient and wait for the right used one to pop up yes. If you’re gonna go waste your money on a new Tahoe or wagoneer no

Toyota/lexus or Honda is where I would start.

This.
Just get on the websites and start looking around and see what you like for what you can afford.

You can probably find a decent Civic/Corolla for 15-20k with a lot of life left in it. No idea if that meets your needs or price.

China will soon be selling $25k EVs here.

The least expensive options are whatever small cars are still made.

Buy a Honda or Toyota and drive it for decades.

I've got 225000 on my Honda accord. Paid $13k and I've driven just under 200,000 miles.

Not every car hits that. But that is what you are hunting when you are shopping for an "affordable" car.
Something under $20k that can get you 200k+ miles.

My daughter is driving my wife's old 2012 Accord. It still runs like a top and hasn't been a maintenance headache at all. I'd definitely buy a used Toyota or Honda if I was looking for an inexpensive vehicle and drive it into the dirt.

I've had 3 Accords, they just dont die.

My first one (1990) had 286k miles on it when the transmission finally went out, sold it to my uncle who was a mechanic. He found a transmission for it for like $450 and put it in and gave it to his stepdaughter who drove it for another 3 years before wrecking it

My current Accord (2014) only has 91k completely trouble free miles on it. Literally never had to make a single repair on it and owned it brand new since 2014.

You can get an entry level Mazda 3, Toyota Corolla, or Honda Civic for about 25k. Another couple thousand gets you alloy wheels and nicer appointments.

I was just looking yesterday (my kid might be looking for something) and saw examples for all three at those prices...before negotiating.

So "affordable" depends one what you want out of a vehicle and where you are in life.

No, there's really no such thing as an affordable truck. The cheapest Tacoma will probably start around 33k...I just "built" the cheapest Tacoma I could. SR trim, 2wd, extra cab, no accessories.

The Maverick would be an interesting option if you can truly fine one in the low 20s...I just hear those lower trims are harder to find in the wild.

Sadly affordability as we once knew it is gone. But, unlike many things, they are built to last longer today. More electronics to go out but cars in general last much longer.

It's the "buying itch" most need to keep in check. It gets really easy when repairs start to pop up and think "made it's time to trade." I'd rather maintain and pay a couple grand than trade in for 40-80k.

My wife wanted one last new vehicle. So in September we bought a Honda Passport Elite for about $47K with 3 miles on it. We traded in her Camry and cash. She loves it. I’m happy for her but cash poor for now.

Now what am I gonna do when my 2014 Jeep CG goes out?

New car prices are scary. And don’t see them coming down much.
