And if so, what was your experience? How long did the whole process take and did you feel like you received a fair deal?

I did. I got a $250 trade in offer for my last car from the dealer. It was high mileage, no ac, and the computer failed. I drove it until it just wouldn't go no more.

Dealer offered 250 in trade. Carmax offered me 1300 which i thought was more than fair.

I've done Carmax. I shopped my car around to multiple dealers including the one I purchased my new vehicle from. They had the best number

They give you a price online, you bring it for inspection and if everything checks out, you get a check. Pretty sure it took me less than an hour, but I'll check that in a second.

Eta: right at an hour. This was 3 years ago fwiw

Sold one to Carmax. Whole process took about an hour to get an offer that was good for like 5 days. Once I signed the paperwork, took a couple of days to get the check.

I could have gotten more selling it on my own, but didn't want to deal with the hassle, so I think I got a fair deal. Probably left about $1,000 on the table not selling it myself. It was an inherited car so I had no skin in it, otherwise I probably would have sold it myself.

Just sold my wife's old car to GMTV. Was highly skeptical, but it was a fair price for an old car with body damage and worn-out tires. I jumped all over it. Took 2 hours start to finish, but I live by their office. Couldn't have been easier.

I’ve sold two to CarMax. Got a good deal on both. Got my check that day in an hour or so. They give you more than most dealers will on beat to shite cars but you can make more on your own.

I did give me the vin twice. Easy process and got a few grand more than what the dealership offered.

I tried GiveMeTheVin and they didn't offer anything more than the dealerships were offering. I ended up listing it on Craigslist instead and sold my car for FAR more to a nice family in Mississippi who needed a vehicle for their teenager.

Do you get a sales tax reduction on a new purchase if you trade in to one of these?

I traded in a truck 2 weeks ago to the dealer where I was purchasing. They gave me 28k. It’s currently listed on their site for 31,900. Makes me feel like I got a very fair deal on trade in.

I sold to givemethevin. It was really easy and I got much more than locals were willing to offer. I stood firm on my price and waited a couple days before I got the call.

Ive done carmax and carvana. Carvana process was the best. You do everything online and i was literally there 15 minutes and that was because they spelled my name wrong and had to re-print the paper work.

I was also wondering if you could arrange that, since we don't pay sales tax on the value of trade-ins. That's about $900 on a $10,000 trade, so it requires you get that much more if you do a private sale.

The Givemthevin site FAQ says:

quote:

Q: Can I use your Purchase Offer at the dealership I am working with (Term: In & Out)

A: YES. GMTV purchase offers are valid at many dealerships. Ask your GMTV buyer to guide you through this process. Better yet, have the salesperson at the dealership you are working with call your GMTV buyer to arrange the In & Out.

I'm not hip to the car sales lingo. Is the in and out a method that runs the car through the dealership like a trade (saving sales tax) and then transfers it from dealer to GMTVIN? Or is it something else?

Basically yes

Say if you had a buyer for your vehicle and you took them to the dealership with you, the dealership would trade in and sell out your old vehicle for a small fee. They also handle all of the paperwork which is a help.

This allows you to take the trade in tax discount on your new purchase.

at minimum I always go to carmax first to have an offer in hand to use as negotiation with a dealer if needed. but they always seem to offer a fair price (Carmax)

Even better, a dealer near me advertises +500 over Carmax no questions asked. Just hand them the offer and they cut you a check +$500. Shows how much these places trust Carmax

If you can go to Texas I had a good experience with Texas Direct Auto. They offered me $1k more than CarMax.

The givemethevin guy says on his site: “I’ll pay you for the opportunity of the Last Look on your deal – if I can’t beat your Carmax offer, I will mail you a $100 check."

Now, he may only beat it by $1, but may be worth a shot.

I sold a truck to give me the vin. It felt sketchy the whole time but it worked out fine and they paid pretty close to what I think I could have sold it for.

This. Having a written Cash Offer for a car is much better a written Trade Value on a car for negotiation power.
