You know what would be pretty cool? If we’d stop teaching the down on one knee bs.

2 runs because a catcher couldn’t get down and bury a low pitch.

I have no clue how this started. I know MLB does it, but it goes against everything I ever learned about catching.

It’s attributed to the 2017 or 2018 Red Sox I think. Their analytics showed it allowed their catchers to get more framed low pitches called strikes.

The difference is we’re talking ELITE talent behind the plate in MLB and pitchers that have 1000% better command. It needs to die until they get to the minors.

With no one on base, I’m not sure it matters.

But once there are players on the base path, I think they should do whatever puts them in the best defensive position!

Don’t know why anyone is downvoting you. It puts catchers in a better position to frame pitches and steal strikes at the bottom of the zone. MLB catchers have years more of experience and are much better than your average college catcher so you don’t see as many mistakes. I hated it too but I’ve grown to accept that it’s just part of baseball now.

2 runs on passed balls that were easily blockable would be super cool to have back right now.

I believe Pirates catcher Manny(sorry I am 76, can’t place last name yet) did it to relieve stress on body. Pretty tough on hot afternoons for a catcher

Plenty of catchers do/did it at the MLB level. But they’re MLB catchers. The game they’re playing at that level is completely unrecognizable to high school and college players.

It’s fine to do it in situations but it shouldn’t be with runners on 3rd especially… ever.

It matters if the batter tries to lay down a bunt or on a swinging bunt. Harder to pop up out of the split.

big catchers who could hit but were fricking up their knees squatting

the Data shows back up what you’d expect, the big issue is going after pitches that miss outside to the side with the down knee because you just can’t go that way as well.

But balls the other way you are almost in position when you start.

you can’t dive as far but if you’re still letting them go between your legs it’s usually your glove being in the wrong spot vs your legs.

I agree the technique is not doing Arrambide in particular any favors.

product of the travel ball culture, they see the guys in the big leagues do it so it must be the way to do it, apparently encouraged by the coaches, problem is these kids aren't world class athletes

Do you really think college catchers are going to a knee because they did it in travel ball? They are doing it because they are being taught by college coaches or allowed to do it by college coaches. I am sure a college player telling their coach they want to do something because they did it in travel ball would go over great.

I brought this up last year and got hammered by travel ball dads. Apparently this is what they are teaching Jaxon and Cayden these days.
