I'll give you their stock response. "He just played street ball."

The people who always talk about X's and O's don't have the slightest clue about basketball X's and O's.

I thought he pushed all the right buttons today - to me the best call he made of the night was late in regulation down 2 I think, the trap out of nowhere on their point guard to get it out of his hands and he turned the ball over.

I wouldn’t say “all the right buttons”, but I agree with you about the trap. My biggest criticism of McMahon is he hasn’t seemed to have the best feel for the game flow and is hesitant to adjust until it is often too late. But that unexpected, out of character trap was huge to surprise the guy who was in the process of putting LSU away. As was the decision to call TO when the offense was stalling as the shot clock was running down in the 3rd OT.

McMahon ultimately has the final say, but it appears he has made David Patrick the “defensive coordinator”. That decision to trap may have come from him

Don't look now, but Wade's McNeese team just won the Paradise Jam tourney in the USVI-- beating Illinois St and Longwood in the process.

Wade played a style of basketball that was very simple and allowed his players to play fast and showcase their athleticism. His teams would struggle against the more technically sound coached teams with athletes that could match up. McMahon is much better at drawing up plays and putting players in position to succeed. His shortcomings are his teams don’t always play with maximum effort and he hasn’t had super talented teams. I think if the recruiting remains good and he can get a couple of elite players, his coaching has the ability to advance LSU in the tournament even against opponents they are slightly outmatched by.

Not sure how my original post got hijacked into a Will Wade comparison. I just pointed out some coaching moves he made like doubling #3 who was killing us driving the lane and make him give it up and let someone else try to beat us. Very timely move. And it worked. No one said he was better than Wade. Yet.

“Time for the Wade nut huggers to admit we might have another good one.”

You knew what you were doing.

I'm not sure how much of it is effort and how much of it is just toughness. You can talk about the talent or lack thereof all you want the first 2 years, my biggest issue is we just got pushed around and didn't push back too much.

Chest is tough as nails and has a non-stop motor, still raw but I can't tell you how much we needed someone of his toughness and what a difference that makes.

The talent has been upgraded for sure. I think enough so to where if we don't make the tourney this year I would consider it a disappointment. 68 teams make the tourney and typically after all the automatic bids that leaves 44-46 spots open. I think this team in terms of talent is in the top 44-46.

I would agree here, although yesterday seemed to be the reverse of what we've seen in the past where the first half was about as bad as it could be and the right adjustments were made in the second half.

For me my biggest issue with CMM, aside from overall team toughness which pretty much is decided when you finalize your roster at the beginning of the season, is who he plays and when and with who and for how long. And with the added depth he has this year it's going to be more important than ever in his years here to find the right mix of that to get the best out of this team.

There are only 36 at-large spots. It’s not easy to make the NCAA Tournament. The SEC is looking really, really good (thus far). Even getting to 9 wins won’t be easy. I promise you, just about everyone else in the league feels they are as talented as LSU, if not more.

LSU’s non-conference schedule, while not awful, doesn’t look to be great either. The 8 mid-major opponents look to be pretty weak. That means LSU MUST take advantage of the handful of power conf opponents they play to put themselves in position to play their way into the NCAAT once SEC play starts.

So far, so good. I thought LSU would lose to KSU and split the Greenbrier tournament. They have done 1 better with the win at KSU. Now they have to avoid any letdown vs the bad mid-major teams and beat FSU and SMU. They will likely be favored in both games

If you asked me to bet today that this is an NCAA Tournament team I would say no. They don’t really excel at any aspect. But that doesn’t mean they can’t work their way up. My hope is that the staff is starting to figure out what they have and what buttons to push. Was yesterday a fortunate “one off”, or a further step in growth? We’ll get to see that in the next month

Yes but X number of at large spots are for power conferences so that in reality it typically works out to being the top 44-46 with the remainder being smaller conference automatic bids.

And my take was I think according to the talent we have this year IMHO we are among that number and I'd be disappointed if we don't make it. I stand by that.

They won't explain because they can't.

All they do is repeat the mindless bullshite going around that Wade can't coach xs and os I tell ya!!!!!

You don't win at the clip he has EVERYWHERE he's been at schools from all different levels if you can't coach.

He's not quite Bobby Knight, but he's better than most. He will prove that without a doubt when a power 4 administration that gives ZERO FLUCKS about what the national media says about him hires him and stands behind him.

Both scenarios I'm talking ab the shot clock was off and game was tied and we had a TO.

You'd think after the awful shot we got off in the first OT he'd want to draw something up in OT2.

And this has been a tendency of his dating back to the last 2 seasons

You may have misinterpreted what a "Wade nut hugger" is. That is a dweeb who does NOTHING but complain about Mcmahon win or lose. Three years later! I never said Mcmahon was a better coach than Wade. Yet. He absolutely needs some results in conference play and NCAA tournament. I loved Wade but I was never a nut hugger. But I do see Mcmahon making in game adjustments that helped with that win against UCF and without their best rebounder/rim protector.
