X's and O's guys - Why doesn't the pistol get more love in modern day CFB?

I've never been able to wrap my mind around it.

You can both run and pass out of the pistol, the QB only has to take a couple steps back on his drop compared to under-center, and the RB can still get momentum to run downhill as opposed to your typical shotgun formation. Seems like a nice middle-ground that could offer versatility if used correctly.

What am I missing?

It’s not a terrible play but you have to use it the same as play action pass.

The play works if your OLine can block well. RB has to be fast and have good vision. And your QB has to pass out of that formation.

Our issue is we run 90% of the time out of that formation and our OLine has a hard time with assignments and technique. We are predictable in the pistol formation.

I agree with this as it relates to LSU's current offense specifically, and wish we'd pass out of it far more often to stay unpredictable.

But I was asking more generally. Thanks for the genuine reply.

It’s pretty good when you have a dynamic QB. Vandy runs it’s pretty well with Pavia.

Flynn and Williams ran the pistol to perfection against Virginia Tech in 2007.

I like JJ in the pistol. I think it would add another element to the offense.

In the grand scheme of things on normal plays the RB being in pistol instead of besides the QB doesn’t have a major impact on much. The reason teams don’t use the pistol much is you limit yourself RPO wise bc the QB can’t keep his eyes downfield while handing off. You can same side zone read and run triple option principles from pistol. You can run some RPO principles. You just can’t get into the more downfield RPO concepts.

The problem is, every time they line up in the pistol, they run it. Predictable shite and garbage. Defense knows what’s coming before the snap.

They’ve not done well with adapting the offense and play calling to a pro style passer that will never run. The offense is still set up and called as if Jayden Daniels was still the QB. There’s not a single defense that’s getting fooled by any RPO or pistol formation LSU runs. Nuss will never pull and run on an RPO. That shite just fricks up the OLINE trying to block. Makes them not fire off and wayyyyyy less aggressive.

The offense should be designed to play to the strength of the QB and have the OLINE firing off aggressively. This offense blows chunks for multiple reasons.
