quote:I guess to me it's just worse expecting to lose because you usually do than expecting to win because you usually do. My expectations do not dictate how good or bad a game is. If I expect to win and do win, the win is just as good. Ditto for losing. And losing to bad teams sucks a lot worse than losing to great teams. Ask Va. Tech fans which was worse, losing to us in 2007 or to JMU in 2010. All of them I know (and there are a bunch here in DC) unanimously say JMU.
Maybe the reason why some of the big losses during the 90s don't hurt as bad is because we weren't expected to win. Our expectations were lower, therefor, they were still met when we lost.

Most bandwagon fan thread ever. There is no way that anyone who remember the blow outs of the 90's would say that 1/9/12 was the worst. I remember being a child and hoping that we just score. A lot of bandwaggoners in here.
I feel like slapping you... It wasnt only that we were blown out 21-0 but that it happened in a national championship game to a team we had already beaten at their home field!

quote:Yeah, that's kind of the point. Only one team in the entire country gets to not lose only one time and in the National Championship Game. Lots of teams get to not lose 9 times, or by 55 points, or to a mid-major like Colorado State or Miami (Ohio). Once upon a time, LSU was not one of them. Some of us remember that, and remember that it sucked much worse than this.

We should have a worst loss for 80's, 90's, 00'slet's show some age.....

5. 2010 season away against Alabama (Peterson left a divot inbounds)
2009 @ BDS-was there!
Anyway:
1. 01/09/12 Nough said
2. 2003 vs UF could have cost the title
3. 2007 vs Ar Kansas could/should have cost title
4. 2002 vs Gumps cold miserable night
5. 2006 @ AU cost SEC/BCS title
On a side note, worst combo Tigers/Saints losses: in 1993 witnessed worst beat down given a LSU team vs UF, next week witnessed worst Saints loss @ Steelers (were 5-0 ended 8-8); THAT was a rough week! never again!

1) 1/9/12 (It wasn't the fact of losing, it was the fact that they prison raped us on the biggest stage possible)
2) UAB
3) 09 Ole Miss
4) 07 Ark (McFadden 32 rushes 206 yards 2 TDs, Peyton Hillis 11 rushes 89 yards 2 TDs 5 catches 62 yards 2 TDs, Felix Jones 9 rushes 85 yards- 9.4 YPC) They completely dismantled us on the ground that day.

We shouldn't have played bama for the NC, therefore the loss on 1/9/12 doesn't bother me.

3 Saban-coached games lead the way -
UAB - 2000 (like that song, "Still the One")
Alabama - 2002 (just nothing positive about the game in any way).
Iowa - 2004
THEN
Florida - 1993 (Worst coach in LSU history, for a reason, had his worst day of coaching against the best team he ever faced)
Finally,
1/9/2012 - nothing left to say

I understand the hate of the 2000 UAB loss, but I don't understand the HATE of the 2000 UAB loss. Losing that game was actually the catalyst for the rest of the 2000 season, which in turn was the beginning of the turnaround of the LSU football program.
As a game in itself, it was a terrible loss. But outside of that box, it was probably the most influentially positive loss in LSU history.

1. 2012 BCS game. We weren't even competetive.
2. 94 Auburn. Throw LSU throw!
3. 96 Bama. At least the team hd their uniforms on.
4. 05 UT. Miles still hasn't recovered from this game in many ways.
5. 09 Ole Miss. Miles shows the world he doesn't have the clock management skills of someone who has played Madden more than twice.
Hard to leave off 06 and 04 Auburn games.
Almost all of these came when LSU was good. There are many worse losses when LSU was crap.

quote:Meh, I don't buy that. Hiring Saban was the turnaround, not losing to UAB. Then again, his infuriating (when he's your coach) tendency to blow stupid games early in his tenure (UAB, ULM) may actually be a part of his "process".
But outside of that box, it was probably the most influentially positive loss in LSU history.
Over/under on how long it takes some Bama fan to actually start using that to defend Saban's loss to UL-M?

I think of it the way I think of the Houston loss in 1999.
As a game, it was a bad loss. But it was the nail in DiNardo's coffin and he was appropriately fired. Hal Hunter steps up for the Arky game and Rohan shines in victory. Emmert basically takes over the coaching search and hires Saban for the 3rd highest salary at the time - stating LSU means business.
Saban comes in stoic and reserved, an outsider. He loses to UAB and fans are going apeshit. Both the team and the fans rally and the next week in an awesome Tiger Stadium environment, LSU defeats a top 15 Tenn team in OT.
Houston/UAB - both losses that actually helped LSU build what we have now.

You don't have to buy it, but I wouldn't put it anywhere near the top because the game meant more than just the final score.
I consider Ark 2007 somewhat similar as I was crushed at the time, but we got a mulligan. Therefore, I still don't like thinking about the loss, but in a grander scheme it holds very little weight.

We didn't get a mulligan, we were the SEC champs and had as good or better resume than every other major 2-loss team.
Plus, true mulligans are reserved for Bama.

quote:It was still an anomaly. In any other season we would've been shut out of the BCSCG. And even in that season the odds were against us. But it worked out, therefore I don't fret about Arky 2007 as this huge loss.

quote:I don't have it in my top 5, either. But it sounds like you are suggesting that if Booty doesn't throw that stupid pick, somehow we aren't national champions twice in the next 7 years and a top 2 or 3 program a dozen years later. I think that's a bit of an exaggeration of the significance of a loss in turning around LSU. I think the win the next week was much more instrumental, and I don't really think we needed to lose to UAB to beat Tennessee.
I wouldn't put it anywhere near the top because the game meant more than just the final score
