Why is the delayed handoff, a la Auburn, so hard to stop?

They were killing us with it yesterday during their 21 straight.

When you see the Quarter back sprint out like he was doing , the linebackers have to respect it . They couldn’t tell if Stidham would pull it and run, they weren’t sure if he would pull it and drop a slant right behind them and then by time you react to the handoff the offensive lineman made it to the second level .

Which led to Devin White blowing up the A Gap and Stidham having to make a quick decision to just hand it off

It's an optional read. The LBs have to respect the run so it freezes them up. I think a lot of teams down the road are going to use this on LSU especially ones with a better threat at something like this. MSU is going to carve this defense up.

Defense bites on it and it's too late to cut back.

I dunno.

This. It's about the oline push, which gives the QB and RB choices. Auburn ran it well, then abandoned it.

not unless they develop a passing game. auburn's pass game is absolutely better, run game is at least as good. no reason to think msu will fare better at tiger stadium than auburn did at auburn.

Doubt it. Fitzgerald isn't a good passer. When you don't have to worry about the QB beating you with his arm as much it makes things easier. Delpit will probably be close to the line most of the game, maybe even a spy on Fitzgerald.

Their running back was hesitating and waiting to see which direction the Defensive Tackles went and then once the DT's committed to a direction they went to the other side. It worked really well for them for a while.

It's nothing more than the ole time draw play...throws off the timing with aggressive blocking...out of shotgun instead of under center

Gives the oline time to establish their blocks.

Seems like there were times that it worked, and there were times that Rashard Lawrence was trying to tackle two people in the backfield.

It was driving me nuts. It takes so long to develop, I couldn’t figure out how it kept working. Seems like a run blitz would shut it down.

Its tough to defend because the D gets too deep past the heel line and it leaves gaps that a good running back can easily find. Hence the "draw," it draws the d who is thinking pass rush into the backfield before the handoff

You're basically making the defense pause for a millisecond. That's all it takes.

It really made me glad that they don't have a better runner at QB.

It’s because it gives their OL time to pull their guards and open up lanes.
