Because the media gave them the AP title. LSU won the BCS title.

OU was considered a MONSTER that year. The media gave us NO chance to beat them. And LSU absolutely creamed them. Sure, the final score was 21-14, but to hold that team to less than 170 yards was a miracle to the talking heads at the time. USC would have been annihilated. They had ONE top 25 win that year. A weak as baby shite schedule. They never saw anyone close to LSU's level that year.

OU practically had the same team next year and USC gave them the beat.( 55 points)Same way USC would of gave LSU the be down.

Could it be solely a southern bias?

No. Because they would have never done that to Texas or Bama in the same circumstances.

It is a "media darling" bias. USCw, Notre Dame, Michigan, Texas and Bama own the media. For some stretches, FSU and Miami did as well.

OU wasn’t as good in 2004. They beat major opponents by 30+ 7 times in 2003 and only 3 times in 2004.

There was a process put in place to determine a national champion called the BCS. LSU won the BCS. It is undisputed in my book.

There was a process put in place to determine the Coaches’ Poll champion. The goal was to limit the likelihood of a split title, but there was never any agreement with the AP to ensure that. There was no official recognition by the NCAA granting sole authority. There was no direct declaration of the national champion by the BCS. Both the trophy and the #1 ranking were courtesy of the Coaches’ Poll.

In 1959 LSU was crowned AP national champions but didn’t surrender it when they lost their bowl game. Don’t see any LSU folks complaining about that.

WTF are you talking about???

You are arguing the wrong point. There are two.

- The LSU fan base position and acceptance of only one true champion - the National Title game winner
- The fact that the AP voted a final ranking to USC

No one cares about the second point. LSU won the championship by winning the championship game. The 03 championship trophy presentation fits in nicely with all of the other championship game trophy presentations.

The trophy being presented was for being voted #1 in the coaches poll.

I knew someone was going to try and be clever. For most… It was the crystal ball, synonymous with championship trophy… immediately presented after the win of the championship game… to the champion.

That’s fine, but it doesn’t change the fact that the ball was given out to the coaches poll champion beginning in 1986.

We can read.

It’s also the first trophy ole Pete lifted in the air the following year when he won it. In those days.. some trophies meant more.
