re: Why Is it Hard for LSU to Get A Feature RB?

Burrow & his ability to run opened up that whole offense. And frankly made CEH a 1st rd pick vs a 5th RD pick
That’s true but Burrow was taking 7.67 rush attempts per game in 2019 vs. 11.25 for Jayden in 2023.
Diggs had 5.5 ypc in 2023 vs. Clyde’s 6.6 ypc in 2019. I’m not going to go so far as to say Diggs would have been just as effective as CEH if they both played in the 2019 offense, but I think at least a little bit of the difference comes down to how they’re utilized. I don’t have the stats in front of me to back it up but I would bet a higher percentage of Diggs’ rushes came in short yardage / obvious rushing situations, as an example.
I think a lot of the overall perception also comes down to:
- Two extremely talented RB’s in the late Miles years (Fournette and Guice) that carried us through multiple seasons
- The above point combined with the Miles philosophy of ground-and-pound offense
If you look at 2017-2023, CEH in 2019 is the only RB who really stands out. Even Guice in 2017 only averaged 5.3 ypc. Brossette certainly didn’t light the world on fire in 2018. TDP averaged <5 ypc both years he was our #1 RB. I think Diggs was a good RB for us last year, he just didn’t have the utilization to put up a 1,000 yard season like guys in the past.
I will agree that there have been some recruiting misses though. Really the biggest single factor was probably Emery’s inability to stay on the field.

I think we haven’t had the very top national guys come out of LA seemingly every year which is weird, but that has changed and we have a lot of talent ahead of us.

I mean the offense as a whole got ceh get over drafted.
Burrow mainly ran qb draws that yr.
He ran some read option stuff.
How are you equating that with where ceh got drafted?
Having 3 elite receivers and burrow throwing the ball helped ceh have more space.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. People are acting like LSU is now above elite RB talent since it's a passing game now. Remember when Oklahoma was throwing the ball all over the yard with Jason White? They had Adrian Peterson too and he did okay. I don't care what offense you're running, having stud RBs is ideal.
LSU has landed highly rated RB prospects but for the most part it just hasn't worked out with guys like Emery, Corey Kiner, Armoni Goodwin, Tre Bradford, etc. A few transfers and a walk on have been leading the way the last few years, that's unusual for a fanbase that hasn't had to worry about RBs since 1995.

Damn Lester, ever heard about Harlem Berry? OP asked a stupid question
Just signed the #6 RB in the nation in 2024. The year before, we signed the 2 best RB in state of LA. Give it some time. BK & Frank will figure it out

It all worked in unison. First of all Burrow is great. But the whole rushing attack was successful because of the unpredictability of the play. Probably 1/3 of that stemmed from Burrow’s ability to run. The RPO/ inside zone / zone read all play off one another & it’s a cheat code when the QB can run & pass in the manner Burrow could

Jim. I’m not complaining. The RB talent has objectively been down the last few years. It’s just an observation.

Not like we have had terrible RB rooms. Emery not living up to expectations affected a couple of years, although we had the best player at running the ball in the nation with Jayden for a couple of years. Sometimes players don't produce. Everyone though Emery would be the guy, and he wasn't.
Kaleb is a flat out stud and will show it this year. He is a feature back! Berry and Durham are both studs, so our RB room is exceptional right now! We also converted to become an elite passing team in 2019 and have not looked like the LSU offense of old since.

Remember when Oklahoma was throwing the ball all over the yard with Josh White? They had Adrian Peterson too and he did okay.
Daniels threw for 3800 last year and ran for 1100. Burrow threw for 5600.
Daniels had nearly as much total offense by himself as White and Peterson did combined. Burrow had more than they did combined.
Point being, Oklahoma was not throwing it all over the yard that year like you remember.

He also played the game of his life on the biggest stage of his career against Alabama. Those highlights were played over and over and over. He went God Mode.

Don't care. Pretty sure we led or were near the top of the nation and conference in yards per carry. I realize some of that was Jayden but most of it wasn't.
Team YPC is the stat that matters. The days of one guy getting 250 carries in a season are over.

All 3 are NFL backs I believe.

Bring back the toss dive with Hill and Ridley while passing for 100 yards per game in the advanced Miles offense.

Is some of that related to kids underperforming?
Here is LSU's RB recruiting using 247 composite rankings HS recruits only
2019
John Emery - Natl 13, Pos 2, St 2 (LA)
TDP - Natl 139, Pos 8, St 7 (LA)
2020
Tre Badford - Natl 130, Pos 13, St 18 (TX)
2021
Armoni Goodwin - Natl 95, Pos 7, St 6 (AL)
2022
none - Natl , Pos , St
2023
Kaleb Jackson - Natl 191, Pos 12, St 9 (LA)
Trey Holly - Natl 235, Pos 15, St 12 (LA)
2024
Caden Durham - Natl 88, Pos 5, St 14 (TX)
Except for 2022, LSU picked up a top 15 or better RB Commit and got the top back in Louisiana or a better-rated back from another state.
2022 is also the only year in that span (2019-2024) that Louisiana had a top 10 back that did not go to LSU. (Le'Veon Moss - aTm - Natl 82, Pos 5, St 7)
Hopefully things come back around this season.

Looking at this kid physically, how could they rate him so low?

Lester is right in this statement.
however, there are plenty of factors that have been stated in this thread:
if you have multiple good RBs, you want to keep them fresh, save their bodies for a season or a career. good running QBs take yardage away. offenses throw more often now.
i have already said that I can absolutely see Williams starting all (or most of) year, but Jackson being the leading rusher at the end of the year.

I hope this thread doesn't leave the rails now.

Contrary to popular belief, I like your opinions, Lester. Don't agree too often, but I like reading them.

the 2022 class was rough.
It’s insane how many decent to good RBs we missed in.
But it looks like we are turning things around in LA.
