Can anyone who knows ball here give a good answer? The defense did improve last year, but still struggled with Reed & Pavia. Milroe tore us up in ‘24 and in ‘23 Jayden Daniels tore Baker up at Mizzou (thank God)

Is it personell? Safety play was much improved last year. We still seemed to lack an effective pass rush with 4. Whit was also out a lot of last year

Here’s to hoping the defense takes another step forward like they did the previous year

Having an offense that can stay on the field longer than 3 plays will help a lot.

He's 43 years old. Give the man a break.

No one wants to believe it but he lost his qb of the defense when Whit went down. There is a lot of communication that needs to happen with mobile qbs. One miss lane or gap makes all the difference

As athletic as Perkins was, he was a liability fundamentally. It wasn't solely his fault, but I remember him completely running past the QB at times, breaking any possibility of outside containment.

Starts on offense and the defense getting a time to get some water and breathe.

It’s kryptonite for any defense.

True. I’m hoping that Spears at Star is much better football Iq than Perkins.

Perk had great moments in tiger uniform but he looked lost or disinterested half the time. Hell he even watched Pavia roll info the endzone

Because he runs an aggressive style defense and when yiu do that the QB is the problem sometimes.

At least Chavis made it look quite easy, probably cause all of that talent back then

Chavis always had four down linemen that could generate a pass rush, and he played more of a bend but don't break style with elite CBs. More teams used straight up pocket passers back then as well. Not all, but certainly more than today's version of college football. Now it seems like almost everyone has a scrambling QB.

I was always told to never answer a question with a question, however sometimes that is the only way of illuminating a situation.

Go back and look at Nick Saban's losses after he got Bama rolling. A single common element of these losses were mobile QBs.

Why did Nick Saban struggle with mobile QBs?

He didn't have Kiffin to help gameplan his defense

BK sure wasn't any help and by all accounts, didn't give defense enough opportunities in practice to gameplan.

Reed
Broken plays without Whit + offense coming off the field after 3 plays.

Pavia
Eh, had a couple busted plays and just poor assignment play.

Milroe
That was just our Defensive line getting dominated on designed QB runs.

Jayden Daniels tore Baker up at Mizzou (thank God)
Jayden almost had 200 yards rushing at halftime against Alabama. Don't think you can hold that against Baker.

Last year it was Whit going down and the rest of the LB corp not picking him up. Front couldn't get pressure, so if there was any development to a play, the defensive backs would be cleared out. No DBs in the area + no pressure + LB sucked down into the play = nightmare scenario.

I think we also have to accept that nearly every quarterback we play is both mobile and can throw. That, on top of the fact that offenses are much more open than they used to be, will just result in bigger plays by quarterbacks in general.

You have to have overwhelming talent to deal with that and when then it's difficult. Which is why it's stupid to not have a somewhat mobile QB on your own offense.

This narrative that Baker struggles with mobile QB’s is bullshite. All coordinators struggle with them. That is why everyone wants a mobile QB
