This remark was made during the 1987 NCAA Tournament Midwest Regionals when Knight’s Indiana Hoosiers trailed LSU 75-66 with only four minutes remaining. Knight stated that seeing LSU coach Dale Brown standing on the sidelines gave him confidence that his team could recover; Indiana ultimately won the game 77-76 on a last-second shot by Cooper Flagg.

I remember that season well. This was during an era when the top teams had returning players for their third and fourth years. Shaq was a true freshman and was not as much of an offensive threat as he would later become. Stanley was a redshirt freshman and was pretty good for a redshirt freshman.. The bottom line is that team had not yet had time to gel into the team it could have become if they had stayed together for 3 years. LSU was lucky to have Dale Brown. He put LSU basketball on the map and provided some great seasons.

John Brady would have won a Chip with those teams...

Same reason Hakeem didn't win one at Houston. That team had Drexler and Hakeem with a great supporting cast and a deep bench. Guy V. Lewis just couldn't pull the right strings in the natty game.

Dale is the correct answer.

It didn't help that there were massive egos when Chris and Shaq played together.

The consensus of the rant is Dale Brown was a below average coach. Why did someone think it was a good idea to name the court after him ?

Ehh.. brought in another McDonald’s All-American who became an All-SEC player, had another Parade AA, had 3 more All-SEC performers and an All-SEC defensive player who still holds the conf record for steals. The roster wasn’t weak, Brown just couldn’t decide on what kind of team he wanted and kept shuffling lineups every year. The assistant coaches had a big turnover late 80s and the Xs and Os people he had during Shaq’s run weren’t any good. Brown just did a poor job, the game had passed him.

The opinions of a few uninformed Randards is hardly a consensus. Dale did develop the Freak Defense, so to say he couldn't coach Xs and Os is just ridiculous.

seems like LSU missed some front ends of 1 & 1's late as well. I can't remember.

Fess Irvin missed one late that was huge. Off the front rim.

More than just Dale being outcoached in final 4 games but also that team had a bunch of egos who were all looking at NBA dollars signs and with only 1 ball to go around, that much talent did not play as a team and got beat by better teams and better coaches

This is just my opinion. I watched that entire era and I think they had too much talent as crazy as that sounds.

Obviously an all time great coach in Dale Brown

Dale is the exact reason he didn’t win a natty. Dale is a tool.

If they would have beat GT, Nati would have been possible.

We were up 20 vs Tech, Brown choked the game away period.

Georgia Tech beat LSU in 1990 because they had "Lethal Weapon 3." Those three were Kenny Anderson, Dennis Scott and Brian Oliver. Sometimes, the other team is just better. Daddy Dale was a great motivator but an average x and o coach at best.

I don't think most people on this board remember how raw both Shaq and Stanley were their freshman seasons. It took awhile for both to hone their skills.

Stanley came to LSU much more skilled offensively than did Shaq. Shaq was very aweward and gangly but could block shots and rebound, even though bigger, stronger guys could push him around.
Stanley couldn't stay out of foul trouble and had trouble making good decisions & wouldn't work hard on the defensive end.
\Chris Jackson was the most fun to watch since The Pistol, His ability to elevate & shoot before a defender could get to the same height was unreal and he took over games many times.
Fun group to watch but as always with Dale teams, they didn't understand how to use the rules to their advantage and were fundamentally inadequate. Very frustrating.

Who knew Laimbeer was pulling double duty with the Pistons and Hoosiers at 30 years old after playing for Notre Dame in the late 70s.

LSU lost the game when Nikita Wilson missed a shot at the buzzer, which may have been late anyway

This was a Final Four game. A different team. I still feel sorry for Fess Irwin.

This game was the infamous Bobby Knight outburst of slamming his fist on the phone on the scorer’s table. He should have been tossed, but instead, the refs swallowed their whistles. Knight dialed up the defense to basically mug the Tigers. When we finally got an obvious call, Fess missed.
