re: Why do you think Shaq didn’t win a Natty at LSU?

Saw Barkley giving Shaq a hard time about having Roberts and Jackson as teammates and Shaq still couldn’t win a title .
Shaq’s response was that they played for themselves and not as a team .

. Knight stated that seeing LSU coach Dale Brown standing on the sidelines gave him confidence that his team could recover; Indiana ultimately won the game 77-76 on a last-second shot by Bill Laimbeer.
Knight really outcoached Dale down the stretch. Getting a Notre Dame player in the game to make the winning shot was the coup de gras.

They were more than solid. Chris Jackson was unstoppable. That team was loaded with talent and I think they lost in the first round of the NCAA tourney? The answer to your question is Dale Brown.
The team with Chris and Shaq lost in the 2nd rd to Ga Tech, who was also pretty loaded and went on the to the Final 4. After CJ left the guard play fell way off for the rest of Shaq's time. People blame Dale's in game coaching for it but it was a recruiting failure.

Um, no
LSU lost the game when Nikita Wilson missed a shot at the buzzer, which may have been late anyway.
Laimbeer was well into his NBA career in 1987

Two words: Dale Brown.
Brown had Stanley Robert’s, Shaq, and Chris Jackson on the team at the same time. Any coach worth his salt could get that team to a Natty.

Dale Brown. Motivational speeches only go so far.
Apparently far enough to get to 2 Final 4 appearances.

Wow, way off on this proclamation:
1. Bill Laimbeer played college basketball at Notre Dame.
2. Bill Laimbeer was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 1979 draft.
3. Bill Laimbeer was a member of the Detroit Pistons in the 1987 season.
Bio at NBA.com
Ricky Calloway had the put back that won the game for Indiana against LSU in 1987.
YOutube 1987 LSu v Indiana start around the 24:00 mark

Well they lost to Ga Tech who had Kenny Anderson, Dennis Scott, Malcom Mackey, Matt Geiger. Brian Oliver. They were damn good. That's 5 NBA players right there.
That team made the Final Four. LSU lost by 3. That was the only year Shaq and Jackson were on the same team. The next season's (1991) team wasn't as good...though Brown still found a way to get upset in the NCAAT by 11 seed UConn.
Dale was a showman more than anything. He could motivate less talented guys to play above their level, but could not consistently match up with the great HCs.

We were up 20 in that game.

Laimbeer went to Notre Dame

His last year there was no one around Shaq. It was him by himself.

2nd round
Lost to a very talented GT team.

While true, Bobby Cremins was basically Dale Brown's twin. I'm not sure that game was won based on coaching.

And yet he took a team lead by Ricky Blanton, Nikita Wilson, and Jose Vargas to the Final Four.
Brown will forever be the consummate enigma as a Head Coach. Just calling him a shitty one is a bit lazy.

That team did NOT make the final 4.

After his freshman year. Brown did not recruit and our roster was weak… freshman year… peaked a little early and Chris Jackson decides to tell the team he is leaving before the Georgia tech sweet sixteen game.

A few points:
Stanley Roberts had to sit out a year, and was just getting into shape by the time we played Ga Tech.
Shaq was a raw shot blocking freshman. He developed his offense the next year.
Chris Jackson was used to being THE offense before Shaq and Stanley arrived. Team work was not solid.
I got the impression that Dale saw sooooo much talent, especially to finally have two 7’s that he put coaching on auto pilot.
The game against Ga Tech just got away from us. We were running them out of the gym in the first half. The team got sloppy with fouls and had to play soft. Scott and Anderson got hot and we could not respond. Chris Jackson fouled out, which showed the officiating was not equal. Maurice Williamson had a chance to win it with an 8’ floater.
I think, had we won that game, we would have rolled.

seems like LSU missed some front ends of 1 & 1's late as well. I can't remember.
