Why did Bo change to a 4-3 defense?

Besides busts in coverage by the secondary, one of the defense’s weaknesses so far this season has been containing the edge. Is this a result of the switch to a 4-3 defense?
What is the advantage of a 4-3 over a 3-4 defense?

It’s the only defense he knows?

Bo didn’t change to a 4-3. O brought in Bo specifically to transition to a 4-3. It’s the defense he prefers.

Just preference. Both defenses work if played properly. Both depend on being multiple - in other words, sometimes being a 4-3 and other times a 3-4, and switching techniques on gap control. Our problem is not the scheme; it’s that our young players are not getting their assignments right. And their assignments change from play to play, which must be done to fool modern offenses.

Before he was hired CEO said he was going to an attacking Defense. I dont remember if he specifically said he wanted a 4-3 but I believe it was his idea and Bo's experience is that.

And the defense does seem to be more attacking. Definitely up in qb pressures and sacks it seems.

The defense is actually good on most plays. The problem is the plays they are bad they are really really bad and are giving up huge chunk plays.

This is Orgeron's defense. Bo was brought in to run it.

O, a career DL coach, wanted the same type of defense he saw at places like Miami and USC (15 - 30 years ago). One, where the DL is pressuring the QB and making plays behind the LOS. That's great...when you have the players to play it. I've thought from day 1 LSU's current crop of DT's aren't the guys who can do it consistently. They are mostly big, space-eating holdovers from Aranda's scheme. They aren't quick or athletic enough to beat blocks and shoot gaps.

To be fair, O is somewhat getting what he wants. LSU leads the SEC in sacks. They are second in takeaways (only because Corral decided to throw 6 INTs to Arkansas). The problem is that outside of those "boom" plays everything else has been "bust"

lb play has been atrocious. It wouldn't matter what we are running this year.

4-3 is hard to do with 3-4 personnel

Bo has always run a 4-3. That’s why O brought him in.

As for the difference, 4-3 allows D-Line man to pin their ears back on every play. Their job is to be disruptive and get to QB on pass plays. This is obviously a high level description.

In a 3-4 D-Line play gap control and open up lanes for LBs to be rangy and make plays, almost like an OLine does for a RB.

One on the problems with transitioning you’re seeing manifest before our eyes. We don’t have many lineman that are physically suited for a 4-3. 3-4 relies on athletic LBs to play around the Line. Ala Clarke prior to this year.

Actually, the 4-3 is more common that the 3-4...

Most of the issues seem to be mental, not a lack of talent.

This. He’s breaking the number one rule of coaching. Let your talent dictate your scheme.

We haven’t run a true 4-3 hardly at all. It’s mostly been 4-2-5. 4 DL, 2 LB, 5 DB.

True, and the same can be said years prior about the 3-4. All teams get additional defensive backs on the field depending on down and distance and the personnel of the offense.

In the 4-3, having that extra lineman regardless of the other personnel is what has allowed us to get greater pressure. Of course by doing this you have one less player in coverage.

Imo, this is where covid has been our biggest issue. With more time, Pelini would've been able to get the reps down with the new system and with different packages of players. Yeah, other teams dealt with covid as well. We just had the bad luck of dealing with it when making a tectonic shift in scheme on defense.

His boss told him to?

It was one of the reasons he was hired.
