If any of you have time, look up Art Cantrelle, Helmet Hut and you will get a good story on him. I never saw him start anything but I have seen him finish all of them!

Jose Vargas
One night in the mid 1980's, we were driving through campus and saw some police activity by Mike's cage. This was back in the day when Mike had an old school cage with a larger cage around that. Some nut job had gotten inside the first cage and supposedly had a gun. The guy wanted to speak to Jose so the cops went and got Jose. Jose went in the cage and talked the guy into coming out peacefully. I thought that was pretty brave of him and kind of crazy for the cops to allow. That would never happen today.

I was down there during the Vargas tiger cage incident.
Jose went on the local news and was saying, "This is not funny! All these people yelling tiger bait. This is not funny!"
It actually was pretty funny.

Art threw a cop against the wall.
Piggy played defense at LSU. Blocked a punt vs. Miss. State in '45 or '46 and was national Lineman of the Week.

Art Cantrelle was kicking his Mama's boyfriend's asses by the time he was fourteen!

I was on my official recruiting visit when Notre Dame made their first visit to Tiger Stadium in 1971. I had heard the stories about Art, so I was nervous about approaching him. He was on the trainer's table getting taped when I introduced myself. He was very nice, but I was surprised by his relatively high-pitched voice.
Brad Davis was my host. Fraternity parties, stayed in his dorm room in Broussard, crazy scene during and after the game. Mike Miley had been punched in the forehead by a frat guy after the game by a frat guy, complete with the imprint of the guy's fraternity ring.
Unforgettable night.

I always thought Hill was pretty cool. I got to see his temper a couple of times, but generally speaking, he was a really nice dude.
I do remember seeing Ron Sancho tune somebody up outside SI one night. He seemed like the kind of guy who would just see red sometimes and all bets were off.

When LSU beat Ole Miss 61-17 in Tiger Stadium Cantrelle had a big run for a Touchdown!

Don't want to link it, but if you Google Cantrelle, there is a Birmingham WFL team picture of him in running pose, ball in one hand, while flipping the bird with the other.

Supposedly Brad Davis was a bad man himself

Brad was, and is, a very soft spoken, nice guy, but I wouldn't want to be on his bad side. The only thing I recall him doing is when some guy pàrked in the Broussard lot who was not allowed to. Parking there was at a premium. He probably shouldn't have flipped Brad off. Otherwise, he was a wonderful guy. A better friend than I deserved.

Good God

Dude has the look of a guy that will flat out mess you up if you look at him wrong.
I have a cousin that was a lot like that. I saw him in many many fights in clubs in Thibodaux(The Foundry) most of them. He never lost a fight and he was tested by some big nasty looking dudes. A lot like Art he rarely ever started a fight his reputation started fights alone. Crazy thing is he was just about Art's size. Actually had guys come from down the bayou just to test him out. It was like a fight club at times. No guns, no knifes, just the best man wins! Boy the good ole days!!

Could there be poorer timing for this idiotic question? I don't think so.

Would it surprise all of you to know that Art, Ronnie Estay, Robert Brunet, Maxie Estay, Bobby Hebert and yes Bae Bae Orgeron are all related? By the Orgeron side of our family they are all the kids of my Grandmothers brothers and sisters except for Bobby his Grandmother is my Dads sister. Quite the football family

I can assure Liffort was not the type of guy to throw a cop out of a window . Very laid back guy .

Yes, these guys were not only good football players, but very good athletes. You had some very good players from Lafourche Parish back in the day.
