Defensively I don't think there is a big need for Calloway. Perhaps he was the backup plan if we didn't get Dardar. He might be a luxury bat that we don't have the numbers for.

For transfer hitters coming into the SEC from mid-major or lower conferences and JUCOs there are at least three major factors they have to overcome to continue to hit for average and power.

Better pitching - more strikeouts
Better fielding - more hit balls are outs
Generally larger ballparks - fewer HRs

I've seen Yamin in the OF in scrimmages and it wasn't very good. I'm not saying he can't do it, but it would take a lot of work. I can't recall him playing 1B in the scrimmages but I guess it is a possibility.

I do like that we will have an experienced backup at catcher if he stays.

Yamin will remind you Frey, 6'5" with hitting potential. Backup catcher but lacks a true position.

Jay made the comment last year that "He hits how we like our hitters to hit".

.390 w/ a lot of K’s = extreme luck

.484 BABIP

BABIP is not just an indication of luck, yes the spread will tell some of that story but not necessarily all.

Without seeing all the hits its impossible to really know how much of a "luck" factor is involved. How many were ground ball singles? How many were bloop singles? How many were poorly fielded balls but not errors? Etc...tough to understand the full picture without having that information. Delta between AVG and BABIP of about 90 points is a lot, but again, we're still talking about a guy who hit nearly 400.

If it was .300 with a .390 BABIP I'd be way more concerned. We're talking a guy who hit .390 with a .480 BABIP.

Hernandez is a very poor comp. He did not have strikeout issues at Indiana state.

The point was even despite him playing at a much lower level he came into the SEC and struckout at a LOWER rate than his last season at Indiana St. despite being moved to catcher as well.

Also the difference isnt THAT massive between them, 24% vs. 18% K rate at their last year at a mid-major. Yes there's certainly a difference there, Callowayd strikes out notably more, but he also hit .390 which again is pretty damn good. I would definitely hard pass on Calloway if the average was closer to .300 than .400.

It's pretty hard to hit near .400 and have so much luck you're really like a sub .300 hitter.

Yamin seems to have been a leader on the team this past year so i would think that would continue going forward. I think he was i injured preseason and between that and not projected to get a whole lot of pt he and jay decided to redshirt for the season. I think he's supposed to be a big power bat so he may play a travinski role on the team of dh, backup catcher, occasional 1b, PH type of deal. From what I gathered from him so far that may suit him just fine

Teams don’t want to waste a draft pick and kids have an option to accepting what the team offers.

If the kid has no real option than to accept what is offered by the club, then the club is going to offer less as the kid has no choice but to accept.

What's the obsession with this guy?

I agree, we don’t need a player er that’s alright at everything but not great at anything.

A .484 BABIP shows extreme batted ball luck.

You have to see the hits to judge if hitting .484 on the balls put in play is luck? Lol. C’mon Tbird.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the “slot” value is also something that can be “supplemented”. Meaning guy gets drafted in say 3rd round as a junior, that can go above the slot value to get him to sign if he’s a junior, but a senior they could actually go under that value and nothing can be done?

They can use the money they save on a senior and put the money on oversigning on a different player.

The lovefest with the fat Pearson is very interesting. Clearly CJJ saw something cause Mikey Ryan was clearly head and shoulders better on defense at 3b.

And we obviously trust his judgement more than yours.

Yeah one could hit and the other couldn’t. Didn’t take a scout to see that

Redshirt Junior Tanner Reaves - This is an interesting one. He is skinny and didn't start last year so he could elevate his value. The flip side is he is getting older and will lose his leverage. I believe he comes back and has a legit shot at starting at 2B.

He has no shot at 2B unless we get major injuries. Dardar should be your 2B. Reaves will be a bench player again unless he decides to transfer after fall ball. Some poster had him as the next coming of Ryne Sandberg just because he hit JUCO pitching.
