I will discuss the incoming freshmen in another thread.

The following players are in the portal and not expected back: Mic Paul, Mikey Ryan, David Hogg, Kade Woods, Blaise Priester, Ryan Costello, Chandler Dorsey, Ashton Larson and Dylan Thompson.

The following players are out of eligibility: Michael Braswell, Josh Pearson, Luis Hernandez and Dalton Beck. There was some talk about Beck getting another year of eligibility but as of now it hasn't happened.

The following players are not draft eligible and should be back: Cade Arrambide, Steven Milam, Derreck Curiel, Jake Brown, William Schmidt, Casan Evans, Cooper Williams, Deven Sheerin, John Pearson and Maverick Rizy.

The rest of the list will have decisions to make.

Junior Chris Stanfield - I don't see Stanfield coming back for his senior year unless he is offered next to nothing by MLB. Defense is good, hitting was improved. There isn't much room to improve his draft stock and he loses his leverage.

Redshirt Junior Tanner Reaves - This is an interesting one. He is skinny and didn't start last year so he could elevate his value. The flip side is he is getting older and will lose his leverage. I believe he comes back and has a legit shot at starting at 2B.

Junior Gavin Guidry - This isn't talked about enough. He could be a big factor next year. Gavin is ultra confident and competitive sometimes to his own detriment. He wanted to be a two way player his first two years and wanted to be a starter when he went pitcher only last year. Perhaps his "never say I can't " attitude caused him to take on too much. I would like to see Gavin focus on being the best closer in the nation and put everything into that. He is a natural leader and the team responds to him. I could see him coming in with the game on the line and delivering. Perhaps becoming a player that fans will remember for a long time.

Junior Daniel Dickinson - There isn't much Dickinson can do to improve his stock and it's his money year. He will most likely go pro.

Junior Ethan Frey - I don't see Ethan coming back. There are those that believe he could improve his stock by being a starting position player next year. I have seen Ethan play first base in scrimmages and he lacks reps there and I don't see it happening. I like him in the OF and he could come back for that but I'm not sure it elevate his value more than hurt it by losing leverage.

Junior Jared Jones - I don't see Jared coming back either. There isn't much room to improve his draft stock. He could be enticed by being LSU's all time HR leader or the shot at three championships . He did say these were the best three years of his life and he could cement himself in the history books. I just don't think that will be enough.

Junior Anthony Eyanson - Anthony should be gone. He will be selected high and there is little incentive to come back.

Junior Zac Cowan - I don't see him getting drafted high enough to go pro. I could be wrong but I believe he will be back. I like these high floor, low ceiling type players. They tend to stay in college and contribute.

Redshirt Sophomore Jaden Noot - Jaden could definitely improve his value by coming back and starting. How much money will he be offered in the draft? Will he earn a starting role in 2026? These are the questions that need to be answered. I see him coming back

Junior Edward Yamin - Another year could only help his draft value. I see him coming back.

Sophomore Kade Anderson - Kade loves LSU and wouldn't lose leverage since he will be a Junior in 2026. He would also benefit from some more time developing physically but when you get selected within the first five picks you take the paycheck. No way he comes back.

Redshirt Sophomore Chase Shores - Chase could come back and still have leverage. He could also improve his draft stock by starting. That being said he will be offered a lot of money when the draft gets here and you wouldn't blame him for taking the money. There is a chance he comes back and that would be huge.

Junior Jacob Mayers- Jacob will lose his leverage and doesn't have a high chance of getting a starting role in 2026. Those two things could push him into pro ball but it might depend on the offer he gets.

Redshirt Sophomore DJ Primeaux - Draft value isn't high and he doesn't lose his leverage. We need lefties in 2026 as well. I will assume he is going to return.

Junior Connor Benge - He loses his leverage but I'm not sure how much value he has in this draft. I think it is likely he returns.

Redshirt Junior Grant Fontenot - This is the same profile as Benge. He might not have much to lose by coming back.

Junior Connor Ware - We need lefties and his stuff was dominant in the fall. He could be a big factor in 2026 and has a lot to gain by coming back if he can reach his potential. It will depend on what offer he gets but I see him coming back.

It's too early to say but the 2026 team could be veteran team with a lot of experience.

I never understood the 'leverage' aspect of it all

So because they are 22 instead of 21 the MLB doesn't want them? I'm asking because I don't get why being a senior hurts you as far as baseball goes

Stays? IMO
Reeves - has great chance to start at 3rd or 2nd next year, could possibly be in the lineup full time as a DH
Cowan
Guidry
Noot
Stanny - not confident here but I think the Larson decision may have something to do with this.
Benge
Fontenot
Ware
Yamin
Primeaux

Gone?
Frey
Bear
Danny Dickinson
Kade
Ant
Shores
Mayers

If a team really wants a player and the player has eligibility to stay in school, the player has leverage in that he can ask for more money or has the option to go back to school. If he is a Senior and has no eligibility left, what can the player do, he can't go back to school so the team can lowball him and there isn't much the player can do.

I'm starting to wonder if Benge had some kind of injury for him not to see the field at all towards the end and through regionals/CWS

It's because if you still have college eligibility, you can negotiate with whoever drafts you by saying "no thanks, I'll go back to college"...when you have no eligibility left, what are you gonna use to negotiate? All you can do is bet on yourself and go independent for a year like Kumar Rocker...those instances are few and far between. If you're good enough, the team will pay you as a Sr. but in most cases they will throw you peanuts as a bonus and you either take it or leave it. that's why guys prefer to sign when they still have college eligibility. Age matters some but is secondary!

It's a weird baseball thing. When a player has no threat of returning to school they lose their leverage in the negotiations.

That's always a possibility but it probably had more to do with getting it done when Jay needs to get it done. He was used at critical times early in the year but didn't always deliver, so I believe Jay lost some confidence. Ware and Schmidt probably fit in this category as well. That doesn't mean that won't change in 2026 for those players.

You can get drafted and return to college

So as a Junior you can say “that’s not enough money i’ll just go back to college and get drafted next year”

as a senior you can’t, you can go play indy ball.

Most players drafted agreed to a number before they were taken.

Because when you get drafted in baseball you aren’t going right to the show. It’s very difficult to know who is going to make it in baseball and he won’t. My job as an organization is to get the best possible player at the lowest possible price although the slot system has changed this some. Money has gotten better in pro baseball since they cut draft rounds and minor league teams

We’re really gonna miss Jones and Frey. Having 2 guys that hit over .300 and were threats to hit any pitch 450’ at any time was such a luxury. Even when they were slumping.

(Jared Jones lead the team with 90 hits btw. Curiel had 89. Jones also lead the team in 3-hit games. He hit over .300 in all 3 seasons here. This narrative that all he did was homer or K got silly. He went through a bad and prolonged slump for sure, but dude was a pretty damn good hitter aside from the bombs. He will be greatly missed).

I think John Pearson is an interesting player. Jay must have seen something he really liked in him in BP, because he was getting pinch hit opportunities in really high leverage situations towards the end of the year when the games mattered most. But he gained weight over the season, and that body type doesn’t play at either corner IF position. He’s gonna have to lose a ton of weight and hopefully not lose much power with it.

Best case scenario is he works his arse off—figuratively and literally—and turns into a lesser Tommy White that can play 3rd and not hurt you. I’m not sure there’s enough time for that, though. And I don’t think you can just plug him in at 1st, either. Jones was extremely underrated defensively. There’s a lot more action at 1st than 3rd that requires more athleticism. Especially for a guy that’s 6’ as opposed to 6’4”. He could battle for the DH spot, but he’s gonna have to hit 12-15 bombs if that’s all he can do.

Speaking of 12-15 bombs, with the limited roster spots (and assuming Jones and Frey both leave), I think a few guys are going to have to step up and give us those 12-15. Hunt Palmer listed a bunch of interesting stats the other day. I think Jake Brown was 2nd on the team in SEC home runs, despite getting 50 fewer ABs than every day starters. He may have to lead the team in home runs in ‘26. Add a little more muscle, learn how to stay back and go the other way and hit lefties, pen him in at #2 or 3 in the order, and hit 15-20 bombs. He’s definitely got that kind of pop.

Milam probably needs to add a few more and wind up with around 15. Crazy he hit 11-12 despite his 2/3 of the season slump. Curiel needs to add some muscle and get those 6 up to 12+. Cade probably needs to get up there around 12-15 catching most of the season.

Too hard to project incoming transfers or freshmen, but I think it’s safe to say there’s not going to be a Bear Jones in next year’s lineup. Pretty imperative that a few of the core guys we have coming back need to take some jumps in the power department. Need to have a handful of guys that can go for 12–15 sprinkled throughout.

We got that dude from High Point coming in who hit 23 bombs last year and hopefully we get Calloway from UNO. Those 2 guys can help with the loss of Frey and Jones power at the plate.

He’s good at baseball and we like to have players who are good at baseball on our roster

He struck out more than 30% of the time in the southland. I don't know what most people consider "good" at baseball. But we definitely already have better than that.

That's a big number to try and make the jump to SEC pitching.

And those are conference only stats.

So when people complain about Jones only being able to hit against mid week competition, this guy struck out over 30% of the time against our midweek competition.

good post. We did just bring in three LHP so that might affect what some of the current LHP not named Kade do...
