Probably Nippolt today, Merrifield tomorrow. But, you probably have to start thinking about how to use Guidry in a dual role and/or getting Pearson some grounders at 2B, too.

I think Nippolt and Merrifield could provide some value if something clicks, but you have to be 2 steps ahead.

I think we need guidry more on the mound. I think nippolt puts together better at bats. He should be decent

I dont buy that at all. Merrifield was way way ahead of him there in the fall, I think Merrifield got a bad rap from his time at 3B (and he struggled BAD there) which he played 2B in JUCO instead. Merrifield had like one of the best averages on the team in fall ball.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Guidry at second, then bring him in to pitch late and sub in Nippolt

Why is this funny? Did you laugh when they put him at third?

That's what I'm asking.

It will probably be Nippolt. I would prefer Merrifield with their ace on the mound. Nipp is hitting below the Mendoza line.

If he could field right handed

I think Nippolt has the inside track to be the shortstop next year.

It's Guidry. If he's healthy, he's our shortstop next year. Nippolt is a solid reserve infielder at his best IMHO.

Nippolt is the likely play but Guidry is frontrunner right now for SS next year and needs playing time. Guidry needs to do some Austin Bain stuff

Only problem I see with this scenario:

If Guidry starts at 2B and then is needed to pitch, you lose your DH for the rest of the game. Both the replacement at 2B and Guidry and any subsequent pitcher would be required to bat.

Could potentially be a nightmare situation if the game goes extra innings,

I would be hesitant to start Guidry at 2B in game 2, since there is a high probability that he will need to pitch in same. However, if Guidry does pitch in game 2, game 3 at 2B could be possible if Coach Johnson has no plans to pitch Guidry in game 3 after working him in game 2.

All three of Guidry, Nippolt and Merrifield are batting below the Mendoza line, albeit with limited at bats per each player.

I agree with Nippolt today and against any RH starter. Maybe Merrifield gets some time, and I like your idea of Pearson taking balls there. He’s got the body for it, and I’m sure he played middle infield most of his life until he moved to OF in high school.

I strongly disagree with Guidry there, though. He’s probably the most talented of the guys mentioned, but our lineup is good enough to survive a Nippolt in it. The pitching staff cannot afford another injury. I think they decided in the last couple of weeks that Guidry is going to be a pitcher only this year, period. They simply have to have him.

And I don’t think Dugas’s injury changes that at all. If anything, the offense dips a bit and the pen becomes even more important. I don’t think Guidry takes a single ground ball until after the season. Even if he’s the front runner to win the starting SS job next year. We’ll cross that bridge later. But this season—with the most talented team in school history—is dangerously close to slipping away due to injuries to the pitching staff. And I’m not even worried about Guidry getting injured at 2nd. It’s strictly about focusing on ramping him up and getting him ready to be able to get as many outs on the mound as possible. Any energy exerted doing anything else is not worth stunting that even a little bit.

Thompson moves to 2B, Hal Hughes and his .150 average takes over at SS.
