I dont buy that at all. Merrifield was way way ahead of him there in the fall, I think Merrifield got a bad rap from his time at 3B (and he struggled BAD there) which he played 2B in JUCO instead. Merrifield had like one of the best averages on the team in fall ball.
While this is all true, what else is true is that Nippolt has been first infielder off the bench all season. I assume Nippolt will get first chance. Hopefully he can hit the ball because he wasn't very good early this season.
I also feel like Guidry will focus on pitching this year, especially with the injures, but that is just my feeling.

No. Who starts at first.

What are you asking me for?

I wouldn’t mind seeing Guidry at second,
w/ the state of our bullpen, nah. too valuable right now where he's at. Similar to Skenes hitting, not worth the risk IMO

After the fall he had its odd Merrifield doesn’t get a look. Over Nippolt I mean, Dugas is obvious

Jay is enamored by Nippolt's defense, and for good reason. Nippolt also works counts, sometimes to a fault, but Jay considers that very valuable in this lineup, too. Again, for good reason.
Merrifield hit well in JUCO, and in all of his scrimmages here. JUCO at Eunice is a different animal, and we don't really know how he arrived at his averages in the scrimmages (maybe they were bloopers, borderline errors, etc). Jay has plenty enough history with Merrifield to know if/when to use him. If he isn't, we can assume that it would be an outlier if he was even a .300 hitter.
I don't, however, think Jay will just sit on Nippolt for his defense if he's a sub .200 hitter even if he works counts. He'll have to look at Merrifield and others. Leaving a .100 hitter in there puts even more pressure on the big guns to produce, especially with the state of our pitching depth.
