I’ll choose one for offense and defense.
On offense : it’s been Dillon jones. I heard buzz he was gonna play over Berry so I figured he would be solid but he’s been even better than that he’s legit been an elite sec back. He’s not a burner but he’s physical , great breaking tackles , and reading the holes.
On defense: two players come to mind instead of 1 : Duce Geralds and Jhase Thomas. In terms of Duce Geralds we knew he was a blue chipper 4 star recruit who would make an impact especially based on the camp buzz he was getting but I don’t think anyone expected him to be this dominant so fast. He’s isn’t just playing good for a true freshmen, he’s legitimately been one of the most dominant DT’s in the country. I don’t think it’s a hot take to say he may alredy be the best pass rushing DT in CFB who also isn’t a slouch agaisnt the run. It’s been a while since we had a truly dominate DT so it feels good to see Duce resetting the standard we’ve been missing in the interior. He truly does remind me of Aaron Donald he is special.
In Terms of Jhase, was always high on him since he was a HS recruit as he was the no.1 safety in LA in the class of 25. I knew eventually he would be a good player for us but didn’t expect him to already look like a veteran deep centerfielder as a 19 year redshirt Freshmen. When he’s on the field you rarely hear his name for a reason. He rarely blows coverages, he tackles well in space, has great speed and overall is an excellent rangy cover safety. His emergence has allowed for the defense to not skip a beat with the loss of spears due to being able to simply move Benefield to star because Jhase is such a natural at that deep safety spot.

It’s recency bias obviously but let’s keep an eye on Cory Barber Jr.

Stephylian Green for me. Deuce & P-will get a lot of buzz, but Green has been impressive too. Ross & Carpenter could be mentioned as well.
The whole DL unit plays very crisp and fast

People were talking about Geralds being a force in camp but how many times have we heard that. He's quickly becoming one of the best players on the team.

Braelin Moore: a guy the BK regime would have you think was nothing special - Lane gets ahold of him and he’s one of the most athletic, productive offensive linemen we’ve had in a minute.
PJ: I love this kid but was kind of waiting for him to get exposed and as far as I can see, he’s been great.

Deuce Geralds. He has a likely chance of being first team all sec as a freshman and could end up making all American.
I think everyone thought he would be good, but this fast is not common.

offense - Davis, thought he wold be replaced by now.
Defense - Mckinley, thought he would take a step forward.

Cooley 0 and Carpenter 97.

I mean, I think it has to be Dillin Jones and Deuce Geralds.

I mean. In this NIL age I have no idea, going into a season, beyond a few players.
so
Dottery, Ross, Geralds, P Will, D.Jones, Harris..
I've been surprised Jayce Brown hasn't been a bigger piece.

D. Jones in my opinion has been a serviceable back but….he is not a All-SEC back. I believe Kiffin will want to upgrade that position next season.

Other than breakaway speed he does it all. ?

If I’m being critical, there are times he makes too many cuts/jukes that slows his momentum while not shifting or gaining much. I’d rather just see him power forward in those instances. Kind of hard to describe.

I really think he's fastly approaching bust territory. He doesn't look like a sec interior defensive linemen and hasn't been able to put on the size or strength to dominate at this level.

Nobody on the offense has really surprised me much, at least in a positive way. I was hoping for more out of Jayce Brown but always thought Harris and Watkins would be better.
But on defense the people who surprised me most are Cooley and Dottery. I thought both would be solid but PFF rates both of them as top 3 at their position in the country. While I know PFF isn't everything and I don't think they're top 3, both have been incredible.

He’s on pace for 1k yards and averaging nearly 5 Yards per carry…… do not get this take at all

Geralds and I don't think it's close.
