Where does Burrow rank in NFL readiness?

I was thinking about Burrow’s ability to grasp an offense and being so able and qualified to start as an NFL QB from day 1.

Has there been a more NFL-ready rookie QB in recent memory who played a significant number of snaps? I think there have been some equally ready, but not many. Peyton Manning immediately came to mind.

Here are some rookie stats:

Manning 26td 28int 71.2 rating

Marino 20 6 92 (9 games)

Elway 7 14 54.9 (9 games)

R. Wilson 26 10 100

Mahomes is obviously one who did not play much his rookie season but destroyed the league in his second on a very good team. Marino had an excellent rookie season and crushed it in year two - on Super Bowl-ready teams.

Burrow’s body of work is limited to 4 games thus far, but of the QBs mentioned which career trajectory do you most expect Burrow to have, both statistically and in wins?

On the right team I’d say Wilson, though as a Bengal I’m not sure.

Andrew Luck was pretty much ready right off the bat. He never had the dog in him like joe does tho.

Impossible to compare based on stats. Several of those players went to much better and capable teams than the Bengals.

I think by the end of the year, Burrow will have had a very good rookie season with much less talent than several of those mentioned.

One thing that’s telling is that Joe doesn’t have the cheat sheet on his wrist like some other rookies (and vets).

True. I think that’s what makes the future success, especially in wins, hard to predict. I think I deviated too much from my initial question, which is regarding readiness - in a vacuum.

Luck is probably the best comparison. He had success immediately, but that, in part, can be attributed to the fact the joined a pretty good team despite the fact he was the #1 pick.

Manning was a Pro Bowler in 2010 and just one year removed from the Super Bowl and winning his 4th MVP. The Colts made the playoffs in 2010. The Manning unexpectedly had the neck issue and missed the entire 2011 season. The Colts tanked and got Luck in the draft. They were a bad team overall. They just had bad luck...which then turned into good "Luck".

Overall, the Bengals were bad last year. They still aren't a good team overall. Joe's having to get the shite kicked out of him on a weekly basis because of it. But you see that the game isn't too big for him for the most part.

Manning was garbage as a rookie. Took him a couple years to become great.

He’s on pace for

4,484 yards
24 TDs
8 INTs

4 rushing TDs

He’s also completing over 65% of his passes behind a putrid offensive line.

The only thing that can hold joe back is that protection. They have to stop letting him get hit so much. Last week was a good start

If Burrow was on a half decent team he would be a Pro Bowler.

He’s getting smoked a lot. AJ Green is either washed up or just doesn’t give a frick.

The fact that hes still completing passes when teams have tape on him and are sitting on all the shallow underneath routes ,is a great sign.

That was really the one thing left for me, and alot of other people ,to watch just to make sure he's what he appears to be and I think that's been verified by now

Roethlisberger and Dak have had the most successful rookie seasons at QB

Big Ben 13-0 13 starts, 66.4% comp%, 2,621 passing yards, 17 passing touchdowns, 11 interceptions, 144 rushing yards, 1 rushing touchdown

Dak 13-3 16 starts, 67.8% comp%, 3,667 passing yards, 23 passing touchdowns, 4 interceptions, 282 rushing yards, 6 rushing touchdowns

Pulling for Joe always! He has the Ravens this week, and that will show what he can do moving forward.

Some have already posted it, but the immediate comparison that came to my mind was Andrew Luck. Different types of QBs, but similar preparedness and mental grasp of the game. Right now teams are trying to play mostly zone coverages and send pressure to rattle the rookie behind a crappy offensive line. Joe is absolutely feasting on the zones, though, and throwing guys open in between two zone areas or choosing the correct receiver when they overload a zone and force the defender to pick a man. I don't have a stopwatch on this, but it also seems that the past two weeks Joe has sped up his reads and delivered the ball a hair sooner to compensate for the OL breakdowns. In short, he was already prepared and he's assimilating and adjusting as he goes. Teams are going to have to start giving him more complicated looks on the back end to see if he can beat them in man/zone mixed coverages. My money says he can.

Different era and offenses but he reminds me of another Joe.
Montana. Quick release, good feet, smart, ability to move in the pocket. Burrow a better runner though. JB might be a little more intense than Montana in game but both are winners big time. We'll see.

Love the story about Montana coming to the huddle before the winning drive against Denver in Super Bowl ? and he asks the huddle if they saw John Candy with his 3 chili dogs in the front row. The whole huddle laughed and focused. I could see JB telling that same story.
