A great hire can later go off the rails, which is what happened to Miles.

Orgeron was a horrible hire that had some success, but Miles had prolonged success and then became a victim of his own ego, similar to Gerry DiNardo.

DiNardo did, in fact, "Bring Back the Magic" and was building a nice program. He let his ego get in the way with his coordinator hires and it spiraled down. He left a lot of talent for Saban to start with.

So, I would say Archer, Hallman and Orgeron were horrible hires, and DiNardo, Saban and Miles were good hires.

Honestly I thought like you do today that since LSU had won a recent title that we should be able to get a coach a tier above Miles...I hated the hire....I hated the man from day 1.

Being a top 5 job doesn’t mean you get to pluck a sitting coach from another top 5 or 10 program. But hiring a guy away from Ole Miss/ Penn State/Baylor, is not unrealistic for LSU.

LSU is a much less attractive job today than it was when we hired Saban

Well yeah, winning three national championships in twenty years with three different head coaches will make any team unattractive, right?

Pretty interesting the amount of P5 Coordinators that have made the leap to HC in high profile programs and been successful.

I think everyone here is dismissing that out of hand.

I’ve made that point before but there are only a couple
Of Coordinators out there that really stand out as worth a look.

Venables at Clemson(who has stuck around forever there)
Briles at Arkansas (who may still be on the no fly list)

Interesting that both P5 position coaches have won Nattys… They’ve outperformed a lot of higher profile coaches on that list.

While I agree with pretty much everything you said, why are people always saying Fickell is next at Ohio State? From what I've seen from them since Urban left, I don't see any reason that Ryan Day would leave or get fired. Why would Fickell wait so long for a job that may never open up for a long time?

Fickell isnt happening.

I wouldn't be so fast to say this. If he makes the playoff, he probably won't be here, but if he doesn't he will most likely be our next coach.

So let’s talk about other top 5 jobs.

Would Alabama, Clemson, etc be happy with hiring Dave Aranda, James Franklin, or Lane Kiffin (who most on here seem to hate)?

Who do you think Alabama and Clemson would hire?

Their track record is no better than most schools. They have good current coaches, but have had their share of horrible hires.

Two of the ex NFL were elite P5 coaches. I understand the coaches came directly from the NFL but they made their Mark in college.

I'd put Ryan Day in there also as he led Sam Bradford (Philly) and Colin Kaepernick (SF) to their most productive seasons as the QB coach for Chip Kelly..... He also was the in-house pick by Meyer for HC.

This board underrates Harbaugh but he was very successful both at Stanford and the 49ers. Also was no slouch at USD

Fickell is NOThappening. You overestimate the allure of LSU and the SEC. The SEC has become a Saban family tree and those "brothers/ cousins" have had a horrible record when they face Pappy Nick.

He's a midwest/big 10 guy and its a great fit. Born and raised in Columbus and played/coached for the buckeyes. He may take another job but i assume tOSU is his dream job if the timing ever works out. I think he'll play it like napier and stick with cinci until the perfect job opens up. Some of these guys jump at the first available big job and its a bad fit and a no-win situation, only to be fired 4 years later and their career path is pretty much ruined. Hes got enough connections at tOSU to know the outlook, and comfortable enough at Cinci to be patient.

Dabo or Jimbo would be in the conversation......maybe an NFL coach like Sean McVay might get a look although no college experience is a red flag. It would basically be whoever they wanted. Although I suspect by the time Saban retires that Napier might be pretty high on the list. I can guarantee you it won't be Dava Aranda, James Franklin, or Lane Kiffin (although I guess I might see Kiffin in a pinch). Joe Brady might factor in here some years down the road. Hard to really predict but it would be whoever they want basically. I mean shite they have already shown willingness to pay 12 mil/yr

If Alabama's not open they would have a pretty good pick of the litter as well. They would look at Jimbo I'm sure. They may not be able to pry him. Again, it won't be the names that people on here are throwing around to replace Zero.

WTF are you mentioning people like that....they've won 6 titles since then. Including half of the national titles awarded from 2010-2020. The state of their program is light years ahead of where it was from 1993 - 2005.

I mean there are a lot of bad posts/takes on this board but come on....try harder.

Dabo will not go to Alabama. Neither will McVay. He’s not leaving LA for fricking Tuscaloosa.

Few coaches are going to want to follow Saban.

They will definitely go after a Saban disciple.

If it were today, they would be in a bind.
