The difference being those prior recognized national Champions were before there was an agreed upon way to determine the national Champion.
USC as an institution as well as the PAC 10 Conference as a power 5 league set the terms of the BCS regarding how the National Champion should be determined.
Now, USC has a legit gripe that a team which just lost 35-7 was chosen in front of them.

There was an agreed upon game that would determine the BCS champion and Coaches’ Poll #1. There was no such agreement in place with the AP poll. It’s hard to argue that a system that excluded the team who was #1 in both polls could create a consensus.

LSU in 1908 was like UCF in 2017. They had a great season, but were not national champions in my opinion. I understand why we don't claim that title.

I want to see all of this at the end of the first quarter announced on the field so we can cheer them on. But claim it already.

I say we start a petition. I emailed the athletic dept when Skip was AD. Skip replied then got Herb Vincent involved. I put it on the back burner but it’s something I had on my “to do” before I die list. What about starting a petition?

After we beat Bama, win the SEC, win the playoff game and the NC; Kelly should also claim 1908, 1934, 1935 and 2011. Then say that we have doubled our national championships since he's arrived and guarantee will be in double digits after a 15-0 season in 2023.

The AP was free to rank whichever team it wanted to #1. But USC agreed that THE recognized national champion would be the winner of the BCS national championship game.

It was silly and they caught crap for a week when they did this in the 80s, but everyone followed suit. Any claimed title pre BCS is subjective BS, so may as well market the program as well as possible.

I definitely could be wrong, but I thought all schools participating in the BCS signed off at the beginning of each season that they agreed the BCS would be the sole legitimate decider of a champion.
