Sorry, but LSU has for so many years overplayed the Cannon Halloween run as if there were no other memorable plays/players. That is what you do when so much time elapse between National titles or great teams. Kind of also like overhyping Fournette as the man vs a team of 11.

2005. That was a rough one. The 1-2 punch of Katrina and Rita bolloxed the season, having to play 11 games in less than 10 weeks. By the SEC championship the Tigers were spent, and couldn't hang with Georgia

For just Football

Positive Play: Billy Cannon's midnight punt return

Negative: PP7 interception that wasn't vs Bama

All sports: Warren Morris Walkoff

I don't disagree. That catch was more meaningful, but the question was what the most famous play was. Billy Cannon's punt return has been played back so many times I doubt any two other plays combined have been replayed more.

The obvious is Cannon. It's so obvious a more interesting debate would be what's the second most famous play.

So has everyone else youre the only person I've ever seen say it was a catch. Doucet-he catches the ball, then loses possession and doesn't regain possession until he is out of bounds. Its ok to admit it. They arent gonna take the win away.
Early Dropped the Ball

Early Doucet dropped the ball. Can we admit that now, nearly ten years later? Doucet caught the hail mary, got his foot down, and slid out of the end zone. But when his body hit the ground, the ball popped out. That wasn't a catch... but there wasn't an official cruel enough to take that play away

But sure it's was a catch brother.

Like the article says there wasn't a ref cruel enough to take that catch away.

Over hyping? He just reset every rushing record in school history and was the first sec rb to lead the ncaa in rushing since 1949. His true sophomore season was the second best rushing season in sec history.

I already stated that I believe the Cannon punt return was the best.

But yes, that late game pass from Russell to beat Ariz St was great. Equally satisfying was a pass by Russell late at Knoxville to beat a good Tennessee team and record a big SEC win.

Warren Morris's hit won the National title. Billy Cannons run did not.

Cannon's run is one of the most famous plays in college football history, not just LSU. No contest.

Baseball doesn't come close to football as far as interest goes. THAT is the difference maker when you compare the punt return and what it meant to LSU at the time to the home run. The interest levels are why the Cannon return is as iconic as it is. I would say that more people think of LSU when you say "Billy Cannon" than if you were to say "Warren Morris".

Had LSU not lost to UT on a controversial call..Cannon has always said he would go to his grave knowing he scored...when his 2 point try was called short, LSU would have won the NC that yr. As I recall, it either the next week or near the end of the season, that loss keeping LSU from back to back NC. Point, match Cannon.

I also agree it's Billy Cannons punt return. In 2nd place is Eric Reids interception against BAMA in 2011.
