re: What’s the “magic number” for McMahon this year?

Thanks to Wade & Woody McMahon walked into a shite show, no players zero. He's never had a real PG until this year. Actually, so far, he may have a good team this year, especially if they stay healthy.
I hope they can make the tournament and win a couple of games, which would be a major improvement in itself. Some of you people need to quit sucking off "The General," he ain't coming back.

Last year 6 SEC wins got UT and OU in the tournament. I think this team can do better than that. If McMahon makes the dance then he’s safe. The problem is he’ll likely need to replace all his starters after this season.

And whose fault is that? I think if he makes the tournament he will get retained. Anything less than that and he needs to go. I think he’s a great person but he’s gotta win games too.

You’re aware he has less returning players this year than he did in year 1, right? A new HC coming in with little to no returning players is not some great anomaly. It’s the norm. This “excuse” was irrelevant 3 years ago

No worse than 2 nonconference losses; 9-9 SEC is his floor

So much left to see, ad and football drama remediation being the primary. It would be an overachievement for the year. But also have no clue what we’re willing to pay for a replacement. No longer dealing with a buyout is a plus.

We will know exactly who this team will be come Texas Tech. I don’t expect a win but a game that is competitive going into the 4 minute timeout is a good indicator.

“53”. As in the mil they’re paying Kelly. Word in the bldg is this guarantees MM another year.

1. One trip to the NCAA tournament or he's gone

NCAA Tournament or Bust

Agree on the Texas Tech game. If we can improve on the offensive boards, play good perimeter defense and keep pace on offensive possessions, it should be a good game. Those last 4-6 min will say a lot.

Up to #40 in the KenPom rankings. Print the shirts!

The magic number is the number of dollars we are spending on football. We won’t have enough money to deal with baseball.
He needs to at least start making the tournament.

There is a completely new administration now, in part, because the old administration refused to fire McMahon last season. The default is the new administration is planning to make a change at the end of the season. McMahon will have to have a remarkable season (likely making it to the second week of the NCAAT) to stave that off
Alt you’re my favorite basketball poster and I agree with almost everything you post, but I think this bar is too high for retention. I have no insider intel and have been very critical of McMahon and was a huge Wade homer. With how bad the team has been, I would believe getting in the tournament and competing would be sufficient to give him another conditional year. I believe if he were to win a game he’d almost certainly be back. It would be hard to cut bait from McMahon following his clear best season to date in case he had turned the corner.

That’s payable over the course of 6.5 years. No one is cutting a $53M check this year, or next, or ever. That buyout will be reduced. Just because it hasn’t 2 weeks after the firing doesn’t mean it won’t. These are the negotiations.
If MM doesn’t AT MINIMUM make the NCAA Tournament, he’s out. The allies that gave him a stay of execution last year are gone.

That’s not MY bar. It’s what I think is the bar of the new administration (or, at least those that put them in place). The same group that put the new admin in wanted McMahon out last year. You can agree or disagree with that position, but it is true. Tate and Woodward wouldn’t agree to it. As silly as it may sound in the overall picture, that’s a big reason why Tate was forced out and Woodward was fired.
The new admin (or more accurately, those telling the President and AD what to do) want a new basketball coach. That means McMahon is going to have to have such a good season that firing him after this year will be wildly unpopular with the fanbase.

I think everyone knows the score here. make the tourney and keep your job. its that simple.
Posted on 11/11/25 at 1:33 pm to crotiger0307
I think for McMahon to keep his job , he would need a deep run into the tourney, at least sweet 16, and I think we all know that is highly unlikely. That said, the new President that just came from McNeese is pretty tight with General Wade, and I know for a fact through people close to CWW that he absolutely would come back to LSU in a heartbeat....I cant think of a greater way to bring some life back to the MBB program than to bring the General home....we shall see.

I think in order for McMahon to survive, at least one of these things need to occur this year:
1) LSU needs to be wearing white uniforms on the first Thursday or Friday game in the tournament, not the BS in Dayton.
2) win the SEC regular season title.
3) make at least the sweet 16 under any circumstance.
Now if you take a minute to digest what each of those 3 scenarios above would entail, and not just dismissively disagree, you would probably agree with this.

Give me 20 wins and/or whatever it takes to be in the "BigDance".
Much like football and baseball, our university is one that we should expect to be in the postseason every year in the big three sports. It's time for basketball to join the club.
As much hate I have for Florida...Ive always envied the fact that they have recent championships in all three. No reason we shouldn't be there.
