At the end of the game White was photographed standing in the middle of the field giving the crowd the finger.

I don't think that actually happened. I think it was after a typical running play fairly early in the game. At least that's what I remember seeing when watching it a few years ago.
Never saw a photo turn up, that's for sure.

Like someone said, you got in by showing your ID. No tickets to buy. Just show up.
That's correct. They punched a hole in your ID and you got in. I think there was a limited number of students they would let in (for a normal game, that is). But what I'm talking about is that the space reserved for students seemed bigger then than it does now.

We who were there will never forget that night in Death Valley and I only wish I could take the younger fans back in time to relive that game.
this...I was 9 at the time of the game but I still remember a lot of things including the no call on the movement of the line...as soon as that happened my dad and everyone around else were yelling about that and thought for sure the flag was for the linemen moving...
I'm 41 now and no game has ever come close to what that night was like in that stadium of all the many games I have attended since then...
it is just one of those moments in time you had to be there...no words will ever be able to do it justice trying to describe it...

…db Jeff Fisher, rb Marcus Allen, ot Brad Budde…
Btw, both White and Allen won the Heisman.

I was at the game. I was 10 but remember the game well. I also have it on VHS. We should have won. Then you could have arguably called it the biggest win in TIger Stadium history. Oh well, if if if

Isn't it great to be a life long Tiger??!!

the students weren't such overwhelming spoiled brats with a massive senses of entitlement.

b.s.
most of the students and most of the lsu faithful were calling: Let's help mac pack.
of course, hindsight is mac was great.
but, those were the pre-ranturds/ anti-miles / anti-jj.
lsu fans are sorrowfully mostly of low iq.

I was in Boy Scouts at the time and had been ushering games for two years and would go on to usher until 1983. The USC game and Alabama games in 1979 were the two greatest games I have ever seen LSU lose. The atmosphere at the USC game was one that I had not seen until that game and have only experienced a handful of times since. Everyone was on the edge of their seats the entire game and most of the time standing up. There were a large contingent of USC fans in my section, and I remember them asking if this is how it always was. I told them to enjoy it because they would never be in a better stadium. Even at 11 I knew Tiger Stadium was special. These folks enjoyed the game and I still have some buttons we swapped after the game. I was really dissappointed we lost, and felt we were the better team that night. But I was very proud of how we fought against such a great team. It is great that now we win most of the close ones instead of coming up short. It definitely ranks as one of my top 5. I can't rank it higher because we did not win. If we would have it would be number 1.

The crowd that night was unbelievable! It was so intense that the contents of your stomach would vibrate from the noise. You had to yell to communicate with the person next to you.
I lived in East Stadium at the time. 5th floor, all the way on the end, right above where USC's bus parked for the Friday night walk through. As the team got off the bus, I was Tigerbaiting them like crazy and playing my LSU band tape out the window.
At one point I saw Coach Robinson gesture up towards my window. I can only guess that he was saying "Get ready boys, tomorrow night they'll be 80,000 more like him".
I've never been so proud of any team in a losing effort. I was a 21 year old junior at the time.

My oldest brother asked me to be his best man for his wedding, of course I said sure. Well it was the day of this game. I told him you better stay married to this woman because you're going to make me miss this game and if ya'll split I will never let you forget it.
Anyway.............you guessed it, they divorced 6 years later.
I call him every September 29th to remind him he made me miss the greatest game in LSU Football history for nothing! I have never missed one 29th. If I die before he does I will make 79 Jr. call his arse.

I was there! It was as amazing as everyone has said. My parents had season tickets and I had a spare ticket to take a guest with me. I was a HS junior who usually took his girlfriend with me to the game. I knew my girlfriend would not appreciate the significance of the game so I asked my first cousin. He was so excited about the game that he showed up at my house 3 hours before it was time to leave for the game. I will go to my grave believing that it was not a facemask and LSU should have won that game. NO ONE LEFT EARLY!!!

If Tracy Porter or Orlando McDaniel would have caught one of those Hail Mary's in the back of the NEZ at the end of the game, they would have had to rebuild Tiger Stadium

I also was there and agree with the posts about the intensity during the entire game. The point I would add would be how tough it was to get tickets to the game. People weren't just standing outside with fingers held up looking for tickets, they were waving $100 bills! I have not seen that before or since, at least not like that night.

the student section had about 5,000 more students than seats for this game and as i recall there was some kind of crack down on this after the game because of fire code violations

I was walking by the stadium ticket office some days or weeks before the game (remember I lived in the stadium) and saw a small sign saying tickets were available. I walked in and found out you could buy as many as 8! Needless to say, I called Dad and got the money to buy all 8. They were very good seats returned by some of the high rollers. Ironic that my dad, a Tulane fan, got to see that game because some LSU fans didn't use all their tickets.

I was there on a 5 dollar youth ticket, south end zone upper deck section U 17.
The place rocked and we won that damn game. The score may have been 17-12, but we won that damn game.
The stadium still reverberates from that night.
Too bad y'all couldn't have seen it.
Best night ever in Death Valley and it was a Loss.
How do you figure that?
