I mean I know we lost, but why was it such a great game? I obviously wasn't born then, so please oldtimers, let me glean from your wisdom.

Tigers lost and no one on TD.com bitched about it.

Of course, in those days, TD.com consisted of 4 tin cans connected by chicken wire.

USC had a team for the ages. Charles White, Ronnie Lott, Keith Van Horn, Anthony Munoz and tons of other guys who played in the NFL. It was Charlie Mac's lat year and a so so LSU team played probably the most talented college team in history (especially if you look at how good the team was compared to the rest of its era) off its feet and probably should have won. While Benji Thibodaux did brush Paul McDonald's face mask on a crucial late 4th qutr drive the play should have been blown dead as the USC right guard stood up prior to the snap. It is obvious if u watch video but it was not called. Costing LSU a 15 yard penalty. Forgotten is LSU got back to a little past mid field and had a couple of heaves into the USC endzone one that either Willie Turner (I believe) or Orlando McDaniel almost hauled in as he was going out the endzone.

It was a good game. Close. And not surprisingly fUSC went on probation 2 separate times in the next 3 or 4 seasons including bowl bans. What else is new? I think it was 80 and 82? 81 and 83. I forget.

#1 team in the nation came into town

Heisman winner Charles White at Running back

Anthony Munoz at tackle for USC--still says it was the ultimate environment he has ever played in

Amazingly loud crown standing and cheering the entire time (I know there have been loud ones since, but I was a first year student then and had never seen anything like it)

Game hinged on a questionable facemask call on USC's final drive to keep it alive on a 4th down (crowd got louder)

Search any of the other countless threads over the years for more on this game

Marcus Allen was the starting fullback for USC blocking for White. Dont remember him doing much but I could be wrong. White won Heisman that year I believe and Allen next if I remember correctly, Actually had 2 eventual Heisman winners starting in the backfield.

I do remember Hokie Gajan hurting an ankle around midfield and LeRoid Jones coming in and breaking free and getting caught around the 20 from behind by Lott. Jones had been a 9.5 100 yard sprinter at Baker. I knew his dad he was my postman in B R. Very good man and two very talented sons. LeRoid the rb and LeRoyal the cornerback on that LSU team.

And someone mentioned in another thread, at the end of the game LSU fans were still chanting "LSU" at the top of their lungs even though the team had lost. That isn't something you would expect in Tiger Stadium today following a loss.

There's an ounce of truth in that, yet after the 2008 LSU/BAMA game, when the team came to go to the locker room, the north endzone and student section gave them a standing Ovation and was chanting LSU above that gawd awful Rammer Jammer song...

Greatest sporting event of my life thus far. The hype around campus was unbelievable.

We would read things about the USC players not being worried about the TS atmosphere because they were practicing with loudspeakers blaring at their practices.

The more stuff like that we read, the more crazy the mood got.

Still get chills thinking about it. Never more proud to be a Tiger than on that night.

And don't call us oldtimers.

Most electric atmosphere and loudest game I have ever attended in my 38 years of going to TS. Student section only sat down at halftime. Just an unbelievable game. Walked out of TS after the game exhausted.

I listened to it on the radio and it was incredible. One of the games that helped create the legend that is Tiger Stadium.

If you get a 100 LSU fans in a room and talk about a "greatest this" or a "greatest that", you'll generally get a hundred different answers, EXEPT, when fans fans 45 an older talk about the loudest, best crowd ever at an LSU game. And everyone agrees it's the USC game.

I was 13 at the time, and did not go to the game. I listened to it on the radio.

I've talked to people who were there, and independently, they've all told me that one thing tht made this game different was the fact that the entire stadium stood up, yelled, cheered, and screamed for the entire game, with no breaks.

In my mind, I picture it/hear it like the earthquake game noise (I was at that one), but for the whole game instead of a play here/there.

Unfortunately, people who weren't there think that the lore of the game has something to do with the 2003 national championship stuff with USC, and that's not the truth at all.

I mean, if Ronnie Lott doesn't provide enough validity, I don't know what to say!

Lane Kiffen was playing with his terds in 1979 just like he is in 2011. That was the best thing about 1979 and USC.

This.

I've been to a bunch of games that had loud moments, especially during plays where the game was on the line. However, in this game the noise was relentless. The crowd energy was incredible. It only really got quiet at halftime. Then it started again in the second half. It was awesome.

Great post "Brock"

And here is the answer for the OP:

From Ronnie Lott:

"I haven't been in an event like that at any level of football. Out of all the games I've ever played in, I've never been in anything like that, and I am including my Super Bowls in that assessment."

That game did follow him to his grave. IMO years later I think Coach Mac thought that if LSU had pulled it off he may have gotten another year, that's JMO
