In 1956 I was sitting in the Reveille office working on a story when Pete Finney, who was visiting the campus at the time, came up and asked if I had written a recently printed story. When I acknowledged having done so, he said he thought it was very informative and professionally done. Greatest compliment I ever received. My favorite N.O. sports writer.

SEC vs. Big 12 on Houston TV

Some interesting figures in this Houston Chronicle article on local TV college football viewing preferences: SEC vs. Big 12

This further illustrates Miles inability to get the most out of his superior talent.

Can you read?
Note in the gif that Watt leaves his feet and throws his full weight on Mett's body, intending, of course, to disable him if possible.
Excellent presentation, but couldn’t help noticing many differences in the crowd now and back in 1954 when I attended the games, especially all the attractive, unattached coeds. Back then coeds did not attend the games unless they had a date. And they dressed for the occasion—no shorts or pants! The student section then started at the 40 yard line on the home team side and extended into the end zone. In ’54 and ’55 you could fire a shot gun into the crowd and only with great luck or skill hit someone

The Tigers ran on 13 out of 16 first down plays during the first half and never passed on consecutive first downs. Once the Tigers found themselves in a hole during the third quarter, the play-calling shifted drastically.

Ball Control!!!! Do you think it was their plan (and hope) to keep the ball away from a superior offense?

You can say that again......

Mattress Mac???
At the beginning of the ’58 championship season, one could always buy tickets outside the stadium around game time. A friend and I sometimes just drove up to the game from N.O. on a whim and successfully bought tickets. The Tigers were undefeated on October 18th when they were to play Kentucky. At the last minute we decided to attend and drove up, arriving just as they kicked off and parked at the gate. We got out of the car expecting to find scalpers hawking their tickets but all we found were ticket buyers like us. When it became apparent we were not going to get in, the crowd tried to bribe the gate attendant to sell them standing room, but the police soon broke that up. Finally everyone just sat around on the hoods of their cars listening to the game on their car radios. At the beginning of the 4th quarter (after the police went in to watch the game) the gate keeper relented and let us all into the stadium where we watched the remaining action from the tunnels and elsewhere. I do believe that this was the beginning of the tradition of sell-out crowds for LSU football. And it is true that we drove up at kick off time and parked no more than thirty feet from an entrance to the stadium. How times have changed!!! LSU 37 Kentucky 7

I can only speak for myself, but the debacle of 1/9/12 did something to me. I no longer get as emotionally invested as I once did. Just doesn't seem worth it. So, I imagine many feel the same way and I think that one game has definitely had some repurcussions. While, I wouldn't claim it is the only factor that led to the decline of fan attendance, I would argue it has had an impact.

Ditto!!

re: Anybody for Russian cake?

In the days of corner bakeries, the baker would take pieces of unsold cakes and make Russian Cake by soaking them in cheap rum (or wine) and sugar, and molding them into a single cake. Pieces of the unbaked cake were then sold for a pittance, mostly to neighborhood kids (including me). This was a way to salvage some cost on unsold bakery items. Dorgnacs still does that and they are delicious. I think they use cherry liqueur to mold the cake.
