What is the most tragic event in LSU history?

The Aggie bonfire collapse anniversary has me curious. We are obviously lucky that nothing quite that severe has happened. Would it be DTL’s murders of students? The Indian Mounds death? Edward Gay murders?

I think this has to be the correct answer. The newly hired, promising young football head coach died in a macabre plane crash due to presumed depressurization at altitude.

Mike Miley is up there.

Any death of a young athlete or non athlete student. Athletes who died during their active years at LSU :
Wayde Sims
Butch Duhe
Wally Pontiff
Carl Otis Trimble ( not certain he still had elikgibility)
Trey Prather
Mark Alcorn

Bo, Wayde and Wally were my first thoughts reading OP.

Yeah, I’m not trying to restrict this to just athletes either. I know the fraternity drinking deaths also left a black mark on things.

Don Redden
Mike Miley
Edit: Marquise Hill. Met him once or twice. He was a genuinely nice young man. The classic gentle giant.

Okay, then probably requiring fans to show proof of vaccination or a negative test to go to football games in 2021

Has to be up there if not #1. I would say Wally Pontiff, with the way he died is up there as well.

This is the correct answer.

Great topic/question, and the answer is Bo Rein, and it's not close. He was the hottest young coach in college football, and was going to be our Bobby Bowden or Spurrier. It's the biggest "what could have been" in LSU sports history. I don't really expect the under 50 crowd to remember because it was so long ago, but it was so tragic and the circumstances of a mysterious plane crash made it more so.
