There is no greatest single play in LSU football history, imo. The Cannon return of course made history as well as the one you mentioned in the BGM made history.
The T Mathieu punt return for TD in the SEC championship vs Georgia in 2011 was a huge play as well as the one he had vs Arkansas which both shifted momentum around for the Tigers in a big way!
That’s two that I was part of so both are special for me!

I know this isn't a play, but how about the announcement during the 2007 UF game when USC lost to Stanford? That whole stadium went nuts after that. Look at me I got goosebumps now!

Understandably, it won't get the publicity of others, but the play made by CEH on 3 down vs. Alabama in 2019 may have been one of the biggest plays in the history of LSU football.
At the time it was made LSU's grasp on the game and the lead were clearly slipping. It was early in the 4th. Alabama had scored TDs on back to back possession where they methodically marched on LSU's defense, helpless to stop them. For their part, LSU had gone fumble, punt, punt in their second half drives to that point.
With LSU leading 33-27 and the defense being completely unable to stop Alabama, you felt LSU HAD to score on that possession. On a do or die 3rd and 10 CEH caught the ball well short of the first down marker, almost completely surrounded by defenders. He had no business getting that first down outside of just sheer will and desire. He got it and we know the rest of the story.
But if he doesn't get it LSU very well may have lost that game. If they lose the game, they don't reach the SECCG. If they don't reach the SECCG they likely don't make the playoffs. And if they don't make the playoffs the legend of Burrow and the 2019 season probably fades into "what if" memory like the great 2011 season.
IMO, 3rd and 17 vs. Texas wasn't as big as that play because even if LSU lost to Texas they could still win the SEC and make the playoffs. They could not have won the SEC if they lost to Alabama.
The moment, the historical significance, coupled with the unbelievable effort of the smallest guy on the field to make THAT play will always be one of the greatest single plays in LSU history for me.

One play that was extremely significant that's never mentioned was Doug Moreau's catch of a Billy Ezell pass on a 2 pt. conversion near the end of a rivalry game vs OLE MISS, 1964.
This produced an 11-10 win over a team that blasted us 37-3 the year before, as well as a trip to the Sugar Bowl vs Syracuse.
The roar from the capacity crowd in Tiger Stadium was DEAFENING!!!

I’m going with the most important play. Maybe not the greatest but it assured us greatness. And that was Burrows QB draw late in the 4th to get a first down. And then he pops up and signals 1st down…. Led to a championship.

I'm gonna say Clydes 2019 touchdown run against Bama breaking like 3 or 4 tackles into the end zone to more or less seal that game away. Kept Bama from ever having a chance to win it. Basically guaranteeing our playoff run!

Donnie Jones punt against Oklahoma to end the game

Against Arizona State in 2005, maybe it's because I was there but the game winner from Jamarcus to Doucet I will always remember. 4th and 10 to win the game. #5 v #15

not the greatest, and not even one particular play, but Clyde's game against 2019 bama was so fun to watch.

This is the list which captures the most important plays in LSU football history. They might not be the most improbable, or greatest display of effort (although some are), but they are the most consequential.
It is unfortunate that Reid’s interception was wasted by pitiful coaching/preparation for the rematch.

Would not be a complete list if the Brad Wing 71 yard punt was excluded - which pinned AL back.

unpopular opinion.. Doucet dropped the ball when he hit the ground thus not completing the catch.
