What happened to rotation of fresh players during a game?

At one time during Charlie McClendon's reign the hallmark of LSU football was the substitution of fresh players during a game to wear the other team out. You had your starters but the subs would come in throughout the game to give them a break. Must not be effective cause Saban never did it and McClendon could never beat the Bear (however McClendon favored smaller faster linemen over larger less mobile linemen which proved to be a mistake). A rotation system might cut down on the instability caused by the portal.

Most players in the portal were rotational players

You have to have quality depth to rotate. We are building it but quality depth takes time to build. UGA and Texas have done a good job of recruiting High School and supplementing with portal at positions of need with high end talent. It took Kirby time to build that depth and it took Texas time as well.

Are you talking about any specific positions? DL and secondary rotated in plenty of bodies this year. We rotated guys in and out at WR and RB consistently. Everywhere else on the field is kind of tough to rotate and maintain success.

Craig never gave on the puff puff give…..therefore messing up the rotation.

Most programs don't rotate on the OL. That position can play a bunch of snaps without wearing down.

Our WR rotation around 2018 used to kill me.
One play you’d have Jefferson, Chase and Sullivan
Next play Giles, Anderson, Dillon.
Marshall and Chase didn’t play enough. Just gotta play the best players.

Now that is a classic comment to my post! You are a genius.

Because most of those rotational players are in the portal every year. Rotating players are becoming a thing of the past unfortunately. If kids don’t see the field in year 1 then it’s off to the portal for them to fulfill their next horrible decision.

HUNH offenses limit your ability to rotate fresh guys in.

Hard to send in your second string when Henry is bigger than you defensive linemen back then
