I believe they think he can definitely compete for the starting QB position beginning this spring. They may still opt to sign a transfer, though it seems they have done some strong recruiting already with other good candidates already there.

I would say most thought jayden was just a depth/competition piece when he was brought in.

Eta: bring one in

I don’t think anyone thought that

I think they know he's JAG and B is the answer. Otherwise they would have went with him last year. Dude has been at LSU for years and hasn't broken through.

Same amount of years Burrow was at OSU without breaking through.

Best case for evaluating what to do for next year is for JD to not play in the bowl game and see what Nuss can do in a whole game situation.

That’s the best way for FANS to evaluate, and that is of no value. The coaches see him every day in practice and have already made that evaluation.

It's also the best way for coaches too. Plus it's beneficial before USC. The coaches have made that evaluation and Nuss is the starter. You just don't want him to start the bowl.

Practice and game evaluation are different. Apparently Rohan Davey would have never seen the field if practice was all that counted. Some people are better gamers than practicers.

I have no idea if Nuss is really a gamer or a practicer, but I know he has an excellent arm strength, good mobility in the pocket, and will extend the field. I don’t know if he can restrain himself enough to not be a turnover machine or if he can be accurate enough.

If they bring in a P5 starter with limited eligibility left, they don’t think Nuss is the answer.

If they bring in a JAG, Nuss is likely the guy,

They're gonna bring in the best they can get. Kelly has shown that he's not promising anyone the job. Nuss can transfer out in spring if he feels he's not as good as the competition, but he knows the offense and has a lot of arm talent so im expecting him to start. Regardless we need a better backup than Collins

They're bringing in a dual threat you can book it.
The Daniels' experiment almost guarantees it.

That’s not how it works. If you aren’t promising the job, then you aren’t getting the best you can get.

And if you’re promising the job, you can’t talk about competition.

WHO CARES?

With any other position in football, or sports for that matter, asking for what people think is a fair and relevant question.

But the LSU coaches and the professional scouts are just as clueless as you and i in regard to evaluating a players future success at the position.

Id appreciate the LSU staff simply assemble/amass as much talent at the position as possible and go into every season and offseason without a predetermined starter and simply let em battle it out.

I mean really, if drew brees were coming out of a local HS today LSU and Alabama still wouldnt recruit him.... they simply dont covet lil white dudes with no real wheels and without a cannon for an arm

brock purdy
tom brady
ect

Some of y'all are absolutely pathetic. Without promising the start you aren't getting any elite or seasoned players (most wouldn't be in the portal anyway). If you promise the start then there's no competition and Nuss should absolutely transfer in that scenario with only 2 years left.

Offensive line is harder to project than QB.

Daniels wasn't promised the starting job when he came here. Neither was Myles or Nuss. It worked out fine

And if the "best player" says I'm not coming without a guarantee?

Then I think him for his time, we shake hands and part ways.

This is LSU. The goal is to win championships. We do that by putting the best players on the field. If you're the best, your play will show it. If you aren't then we'll use every tool at our disposal to help you reach your potential to get on the field and helps us achieve our championship goals/your personal goals for your career both collegiate and professional.

You assume he wasn't promised the start, but have no idea. That said it's a totally different situation. Myles had already been the starter for 2 years, but never got to play it out due to injury. Had he not washed out he probably would have started over Jayden, but in the end it was a competition between Jayden and Nuss. So Jayden got exceptionally lucky.

He also wasn't some elite transfer nor was Burrow. If BK was to bring in a Burrow or Jayden next year they wouldn't beat out Nuss because he's not Brennan. Unless they either are promised the start or he puts too much value on experience in which case that's still basically handing the start to any transfer. The chances of getting a transfer who has looked bad at another school to come here and be the backup, but they beat out the actually good presumed starter is exceptionally low. Even the Nuss haters know that won't happen which is why many are begging for a "proven transfer" who would in fact have to be promised the job beforehand.
