What did Kelly see in Sloan?

Felt like a bit of a random hire at the time, as he was a South Carolina guy who had just lost his job at La Tech at a lower level.
I know he recruited some decent players to Tech from Louisiana but it’s not like he was pumping QBs into the NFL. I didn’t see where he and Kelly had crossed paths previously at any point. Don’t even think they played against each other.
It definitely looks like it’s working out. Just curious if anyone has insight on this.

Just talk to some Louisiana high school coaches and you'll see why. Sloan is a good dude and local coaches love him.

It literally says in the first line of his lsu bio - a proven recruiter with strong ties to Louisiana.
That’s what Kelly saw & thankfully him, Denbrock, and Daniels have been very successful together.

Where are you seeing that he lost his job at Tech? From everything I’ve seen he’s well established in Louisiana and is credited with a lot of the success that LA Tech had over the years. I think he was pretty well known in Louisiana circles.

Certainly easier to say now with hindsight
I assume he was part of getting Amik and Ferguson to Tech but LSU is obviously on a whole different level.
Just curious how the connection happened with Kelly, and why QB coach was the designation. He was even hired before the OC.

I believe he was Holtz’s OC and Holtz had just been fired. Perhaps Sonny Cumbie would have retained him but he was very much in limbo when Kelly hired him I believe.

Blake Baker probably recommended him. They worked together at Tech for 5 seasons and are good friends. Sloan was known as a very good offensive mind and an outstanding recruiter so it's not really that head scratching especially considering the need for coaches who knew Louisiana.

He probably saw, from his coaching office at Louisiana Tech, (a school that I cheer for so long as they’re not playing LSU) that the head football coach from LSU was calling him to offer him a job and that’s about all the connection that was needed for him.
