What a coaching failure the lack of challenge was.

Now O says nobody upstairs told him? Hell they were talking about it on TV well before the next play. You going to tell me with all the money and staff we don’t have anyone monitoring the broadcast ? Good grief.

Bet your arse every other coach in the SEC would have thrown the challenge flag.

Really a head-scratcher. To be fair, he's been good up to that point as far as clock and timeout management, etc.

Can we blame spotters up in the booth as well? Or Ensminger, he's up there too. (not giving O a pass Im thinking no one upstairs pushed for it either)

Obviously. You challenge and you win. It was clear they shorted LSU by about 12-18 inches.

That said, it does not guarantee that a 1st down would have been given, but it would have gone from 4th and 2 to 4th and inches. Meanwhile, Edward and co. get to take the extra minute or so to decide what they wanted to do.

It was a win/win and Edward passed on it.

Ed throwing his hands up at it should anger people just as much as if he saw it and decided not to go for it. Inexcusable in this day and age. Christ I was at the game and we were all sure he got it.

I’m not sure his mic is even on... if it is then nobody is talking to him because he never talks in it since it’s always up. No input whatsoever. I’d really rather him not wear headphones

When your HC says he didn't do something because no one told him what to do you have a problem.

First off the coaches can not watch the broadcast of the game on tv.

There is no challenge flag in college football. You have to call a timeout to request it and you don’t get that timeout back even if you win the challenge.

That call has to come from someone in the booth as anyone on the field does not have the proper angle to make that call.

Challenging the spot of the ball is tough. They don’t get overturned very often especially in plays up the middle because it is hard to see where the ball is in the scrum. It’s a 50/50 shot to get the spot changed and still may not have gotten the first down if they changed the spot. LSU’s o line had been getting worked all game so even on 4th and inches you may not get the first.

You have roughly 20-30 seconds to contemplate all the possibilities above.

We had a timeout that we weren’t going to need at that point in the half. We should have used it there.

Even if spot not changed, it would have given us more time to decide whether to go for it or not.

It was a mistake on our part. I don’t necessarily consider it a colossal blunder like the OP, but it was definitely a missed opportunity.

I’m not saying they should not have challenged it I’m just trying to justify why they may not have. Ultimately it is O’s decision to challenge or not based on the information given to him from the guys up top. They may have said challenge it and he overruled. I don’t think not challenging is the worst decision and the reason LSU lost the game. Shoot if they get the first whose to say they still score a touchdown.

I recall a story from the 2007 LSU/Florida game where the booth was telling Urban to challenge one of the 4th and ones that Hester picked up and he overruled it.

Agree 1000%. This is the problem with O. He isn't qualified to take the initiative and make these gut feeling decisions on his own. Instead, he has to wait to be told what to do. That's as arse backwards as you can get. Time to move on boys.

While I normally don't listen to Mascona, I did yesterday. He discussed the questionable spot and played a clip from O's presser.

Matt went on to discuss that the replay of the plays for the coaches' review aren't necessarily at the same playback speed as TV. Also, that not all stadiums/ venues are the same and there is no rule mandating the time to provide reply for coaches.

This is what Orgeron eluded to when he was waiting from a call from the booth.

FWIW, Matt also said kicking the FG and taking the points was the right call.
