Why were we cheering?
UGA's starting QB David Greene was out for a few plays and Shockley had the unenviable task of starting a Bulldog drive inside their own 5 yard line in the SEZ. It was deafening. He nearly dropped the ball every time he handled it. That was the "cheering."
Also, later in the game, they had just tied the score at 10-10 on a 93-yard screen pass.
From that point until UGA kicked off, all you heard was 92,000 bellowing "L S U, L S U" over and over at the top of their lungs. Richt was quoted as saying later that it was the loudest he had every heard a stadium cheer in unison.
It was absolutely glorious. Then Devery returned the UGA kickoff to nearly midfield and Death valley was rocking again even louder.
A few plays later, when Mauck found Skyler Green in the NEZ for the go-ahead score, Death Valley came unglued.
Then we intercepted Greene's final pass and beddlam ensued. Herbstreit had picked UGA to win

It was EASILY the loudest DAY game ever in Death Valley. Rivaled only by maybe Bama 2010 and Auburn 1969 (my first game as a little kid.)

I don't know about the rest of TD, but that was IMO the loudest and rowdiest I can remember Tiger Stadium in a long time.

It was easily he loudest DAY game, but IMO USC '79, FSU '82, UF '97, UT '00, UF '07, Bama '12, and now Ole Miss '14 were louder.
I hope Nov 8, 2014 makes all those games sound like a Monday morning Art History Lecture in Peabody hall or a sign Language workshop in the Helen Keller Room of the basement of the Hill Memorial Library.

Not scrolling the whole thread, but if not already mentioned, Tom Tupa, the Ohio State QB in the late '80's who made the mistake of trying to "shush" the crowd on the first series of the game.

That's saying he was impressed with the atmosphere. Doesn't mean he was "rattled." I don't think he was.

I was in the Greek section, and it was PACKED. We were damn near standing 2 to a seat. That play happened right in front of us. It was so loud I couldn't hear my date right next to me.
When they scored, we just kept cheering. It broke UGA's spirit! Greatest show of fandom ever! Just thinking about that game gets me pumped up.

Actually, he also said this:
"It's probably the only time in my life I was intimidated by the crowd. A lot of great players have played in that stadium, but I don't know if any team has walked into that stadium and dealt with what we went through. From the time we landed to the time we left, I don't know if a team has ever gone through that." - Ronnie Lott
