Whats amazing is tigers threw two interceptions one a pick six and fumbled twice and still had a chance to beat Vols. I believe a painting of that play hangs at Tennessee and Johnny Majors said stopping cannon one of greatest plays in Vols history.

I think the only way to compare tiger stadium on Saturday night today is compare to other top football programs who are trying to keep fans interested and entertained. I believe lsu stacks up at the top. But you cannot compare to the late 50's thru the 80's.when it was rowdy and craziness unexpected sometimes prevail ed. student section in the 70's was at least twice what it is now and along with the band had sections starting on the 40 yard line.
I remember tailgating becoming popular in the
mid to late 70's....but nothing near the level
of today.

in the late 60's and early 70's there was still
a large area of greyhound buses parked near the stadium....a lot of small groups around the quad near chemistry bldg, in south stadium
there were rv's but very few compared to recent years

I lived in Johnston hall across from east side of
stadium in 1969-70...the hatcher mess hall next door
would serve steak dinner on gameday...most fans ate
or stopped at bars along the way.

in the Stovall era I remember suddenly seeing fans
parking all over campus where there was parking.as
everybody knows many of the parking lots no longer exist that were available in those days.

Ronnie lott usc vs lsu '79.."i haven't been in an event like that at any level of football and
I am including my super bowls in that assessment"

john robinson coach usc 1979 vs lsu

his description of tiger stadium sept 29,1979

"it makes notre dame look like romber room."

I would say this photo late sixties...no
pmac....no rv's....lots of buses and parking.
stadium full about 68,000.
the difference for lsu is we have a winning coach
who has stayed at lsu.

history will show lsu has not had elite coaches
stay at lsu. the best coaches in lsu football
all left at a point when they could have stayed
at lsu. the exception is les miles.

going back to the 1930's lsu had biff jones.
he had lsu near the top of the polls when he was
run off by huey long. he went on to put nebraska
on the football map

1960's paul dietzel's leaving at his prime
put lsu behind bama and a long run for the bear

1980's arnsparger if lsu administration had worked with him may have set lsu for good run
instead he went to florida.

2000's saban leaves. again lsu can not keep
a great coach.

then miles comes after saban. he has had two chances to go back to michigan. he is the
only elite coach to stay at lsu.

look at the coaches in sec history with most
wins. lsu coaches not very well represented.

for the first time we have had stability with
a coach really committed to lsu long term and
is winning at an all-time level at lsu
i remember referee call at end of lsuvsflorida
1989 at lsu

florida had the ball score is 13 to 13

what seemed to be last play of game. horn sounded.
lsu and florida heading off field.

ref puts one second back on clock. florida
qb had thrown ball out of bounds. ref says
clock does not start until it hits someone
in this case someone out of bounds.

archer goes crazy....florida lines up kicks
field goal wins game.the crowd did not want to
leave lsu coaches tried to keep officials from
going off field. it was a wild ending.

galen hall immediately resigns in visitors locker room after game because of ncaa violations.

arnsbarger ad at florida hires spurrier in 1990

wake forest 1960

i remember stepping from the portal and
seeing tiger stadium under the lights

there was not a large crowd...i believe it was
high scool band nite...to fill seats high school bands were invited...we ate at hatcher mess hall
across from east side of tiger stadium.

i had to wear a tie and nice sweater
in 70's and early 80's student section was huge
for big games. that like so many things: the oranges thrown at florida state...rushing the
field after ole miss game in '70 (before fences)
the overall rowdiness..poking mike in front of the student section half a dozen times..will
never happen again

the amount of booze in the stadium was a lot more years ago at night games.visiting teams dodged whiskey half pints.

modern security and the change in the makeup
of the type of fans in stands have changed
the experience some for the good and some
like tv time outs constantly are just part of the
times we live in.

i have an lsu pennant from late fifties.
on the pennant it has:

national champions with a tiger and football.
below it has "1908 and 1958"
most of the people on this board are out of touch with reality.even sabin lost at least 3
games every year he was at lsu but one.

...but when i look at how many posts some have
i say get a life!
if i had to rate the sec at this point i would
have sc,ala,florida ahead of lsu.

lsu defense has not been tested...auburn is dead last in offense in sec...

florida has 2 sec wins on road at a&m and tenn and 3 sec wins overall.sc looks best to me so far ...ala more balanced on offense but untested.

last year after 4 games lsu was much better than this years team...play makers such as honey badger and morris claborne emerged .

last year lsu scored 8 defensive touchdowns in the season that was huge.

the penalty which had auburn decided to take would have changed both down and distance for lsu.

i believe lsu had to wait to see what auburn would do. the field goal unit was ready on sideline...but you would not want offense removed
from field with 3rd down coming up .

when auburn decided to decline the penalty the field goal unit was sent in and i thought he had enough time with good snap and hold

lsu used its last time out on previous play with clock run down.

to me the real problem where the penalties which
seemed to disrupt almost every phase of lsu's game.

re: R.I.P. Steve Van Buren

frank gifford once said on monday night football
"steve van buren was greatest running back he had ever seen play"

i remember a picture taken in pmac of lsu pro football hall of famers: van buren, tittle and taylor probably in the 80's

is anybody really happy??

yesterday i listened to lynn rollins two hour
tiger sports show. over 80% of callerscomplaining
about jlee playing time and how they have lost respect for les miles.

i go to a christmas party last weekend everybody
complaing about jefferson, lee or about off.

this is so different from last two bcs championships. the tiger faithful were excited
and positive ....the fan base was in a frenzy.

many or complaining about the rematch.

the lsu tigers are on top of the college football
world and are on the cusp of becoming the number one football program in sec. when this team beats bama they may be recognized by some as one of the greatest teams ever!

but, if you listened to many tiger fans you would find that hard to believe!
i don't buy all this media bias.

look lsu football and tiger stadium are recognized
by the majority of media and fans as the tops of
the college football world .

michigan-usc-notre dame-ohio state-oklahoma would
give anything to be where lsu has been the past 10 years.

"i know our place " and today lsu sits on top of the college football world and when your on top
some will take their shots.

lsu beat tulane (sec champion in 1949)
21-0 to give them victories over 3 conference
champs

will lsu get their swagger back?

Posted by ttigermike on 11/15/11 at 9:54 am
lsu has not beat both ole miss and arkansas
in the same year since 2006....many of these games have gone to overtime..lsu was favored and it seemed like they played not to lose.

lsu comes off the alabama victory in great position but that game demanded a tremendous effort and focus. can they reach that point
again? will they play with that wreckless abandon
we saw in the first qtr vs florida.

this ole miss game is huge ...not just to win
but for the tigers to get that swagger back!!
we will know in january.....we have maybe five
games left to play . way to early....the back side
of the schedule has always seperated out the great
teams from good lsu teams.

if this team wins sec championship and beats a good stanford or oklahoma team we may say they are
the best;but one slip to arkansas and things
could turn out different.
since 2000 lsu 4-1 vs bama in tuscalousa.
3-2 in tiger stadium.
