The relevant question, from the SEC's standpoint, is whether he signed a contract with a pro team or not. If he only participated in minicamp but never got signed (like Cole Hutson at UT), then he would be eligible.

The issue with their current stance on this is that it was not their stance until now. The official stance, for football, was that any player who declared for the NFL draft and hired an agent was no longer eligible. The NCAA recently moved that goal post...but only for some...and after others had already made the move. They chose an arbitrary distinction that excluded only a handful of these guys. The players argument is that this is a out fairness...and it's a valid one.

Yes. If you participate in any activity in the NFL, you’re under a contract of some type.

Not according to Mr Sankey while he was on the stand today...

Mini camp is not the same as training camp.

So he participated in camp and wasn’t compensated?

Sounded to me like the kicker “chose the leave amateur football” so no coming back to college is the Stanky rule.

That's mini-camp though, not Maxi-camp

I'm sure we will see SEC vs South Carolina in federal court too, right? Right? Getting sued like LSU, right?

I get the sarcasm. Those sorry bastards are only interested in going after LSU.

Texas had an athlete who had actually signed a contract. Missouri has a female athlete who's coming back from some sport.

But all the SEC and Paul Finescum want to talk about are Lane Kiffin and the SEC.

This is the correct answer…they get paid to attend minicamp. Just like an udfa gets paid to come to training camp. Those are unguaranteed contracts so when the team cuts them they are free and clear. Both scenarios the player is receiving compensation for practice/auditioning. The dispute is purely semantics as, up until now, all the NCAA has used to qualify professionalism is getting paid by a professional franchise.

Yes that’s the distinction the SEC wrote into its bylaws in its emergency meeting last week in order to be able to claim that only the two players Lane was linked with were a violation of the rules.

Is a participation agreement and waiver a legally binding contract between the NFL team and the player participating in minicamp?

It would have to be, to have any effect at all, wouldnt it? Otherwise why do they make the participants sign it? So, yes. He signed an "NFL contract"

Ok now what about all of the basketball players with actual pro contracts? Womens athletes that have been doing this for years?

they should be able to rip apart the SEC on what makes them ineligible. There were 3 different ways to be ineligible and if you meet any 1 of those ways then you are inelgible. way number one:

Players who declared for the NFL, NBA, or WNBA draft and did not properly withdraw are ineligible.

guaranteed that guys that just went to minicamps had their name in the draft and did not withdraw it. So drafted or not and how long you lasted should be mute point and they are all ineligible. Really think this is the whole reason we are even pursuing this is because it is not being treated across the board according to the guidelines they just implemented. if this wasn't one and it just listed those that signed official contracts, invited to training camp etc then it would be different.

My question would be, if a player participates in a mini camp and the team decides not to pay him, what would be his recourse? Certainly he’s guaranteed his pay in some way.
