Not picking on you Doc, but this is just stupid. He may lose a year of eligibility because of the suspension, but not because he isn't on the team. You have 5 years to play 4 once you attend classes full time. A player could leave after one year of playing during his freshman year, just because. If he returned in a year, he would have used that year as his redshirt and would have 3 yrs of eligibility remaining.

Hard time believing the NCAA would grant redshirt because a player was suspended for breaking team rules. Maybe it's just me?

it resting in allevas hands makes me think it wont go the way most of us would like.

I think it's the admin and not Aleva. In the wake of Penn State, they will overreact to reign in these "runaway" athletic depts. It's about perception, not reality.

All Les has to say is that Tm7 was initially given the 1yr suspension option or dismissal. He originally chose dismissal but has since had a change of heart. LSU is allowing him to take original penalty of 1 yr suspension.

Not debating that he will lose a year; just debating the reason. It's because he is being sanctioned, not because he isn't on the team.

If he doesn't play this year, he would automatically get the redshirt, since he hasn't redshirted yet. It's not the same as having played in a couple of games, getting suspended for the remainder of the season and trying to compare it to a medical hardship.

My understanding as well. He would have 5 to play 4 and he didn't RS. I think he could play '13 and '14 if he sits out '12.

I'll play devils advocate

Why does he deserve a fourth chance if he fricked up the first three?

No player is bigger than the University itself

Why does anyone? That's the way it is written in the policy, assuming he is on step 3.

The rules are exactly what he said, you get five calendar years to spend four on the field. Even if the NCAA regs state that a suspension counts as a burn on playing eligibility, he would be eligible to return as a senior with one year of playing eligibility and two years on his clock.

Id say cus he wont be on scholly, or at least alleva wouldnt allow that. So if he messes up before next september it wouldnt matter. Hed just be a paying student and wouldnt be let back on the team.

Well why does anyone deserve a fourth chance? Why are penalties written up in the handbook for fourth offenses if no one deserves that chance?

Well why not just change the rules to 1 and done, right?
