I've got to be honest--I didn't know this human being existed until the last couple weeks of intra-squad. But man, he is really good, and we really needed him. Unlike years past where we we really right-handed heavy--one year where I don't think Paul even had a LHP on the entire roster--it's flipped this year, particularly in the bullpen (and maybe even in the starting weekend rotation if the rumors of Jump and Coleman joining Holman with Hurd probably moving to the pen, at least temporarily).

It looks like Jay is going to really rely on Ack and Herring as the 1st guys out of the pen on Friday and Saturday for extended relief. And Loer hasn't looked great so far, but I think the plan is to be able to use him in high-leverage relief. Same thing for DJ Primeaux. And who knows what Anderson's ultimate role will be, but I think he's gonna wind up throwing in big weekend spots. All lefties.

Which leaves us with only Dutton and Guidry that Jay currently thinks he can trust in late-inning, high-leverage situations from the right-side. And neither one of them are high-veto guys, which I think you really need in the back of the pen, not only for matchups--you want a high velo RHP to come in in close games with inherited runners to be able to get a big strikeout or 2 against RH hitters in the middle of lineups--but to give hitters a different look if they're facing mainly guys from the left side all weekend.

We've got Moffett, who looks really good so far, and Little, who may just be who he is. I know Jay hopes for them to keep developing and to be able to trust them in big spots later in the year, but I think he still wants to see more before him puts them in big spots in the SEC. Which is where Ulloa comes in and comes in huge. High velo RHP who throws strikes and the moment doesn't look to big for him. He is simply a HUGE piece of the pen right now, rounding it out as much more complete, giving that high-velo guy that Jay already trusts from the right side. Even if 1 of Moffett or Little--preferably both--do develop into guys he can trust later on, and maybe Noot comes back by the end of the season and becomes another RH arm to come in late, and Hurd sticks in the pen, Ulloa is still gonna be a guy who comes in in big spots all year.

And I'm not sure Jay knew it when he got him, but we really, really needed him. Thank God he did. What a huge, under-the-radar, get from the portal. Excited to watch hm throughout the season.

Ulloa Is the man. He’s only going to get more dominant out of the pen

The interest part here is he was not considered to be a high leverage guy coming into the season. He struggled a good bit in the fall and some more in winter intersquads. Ever since he hit the field this season though it's been a lot of quality appearances already though.

I think he had like a 7 ERA and as many walks as innings back in fall and also had about a 7 ERA this winter.

On the flipside Loer looked the dominant bullpen guy in intersquads and he just hasnt found it yet in a game.

I agree, but he was a JUCO guy. Only reason I’m distinguishing is because it’s more of a traditional recruiting path than the speed dating that happens with the portal.

Fair enough, but he seemed to be kind of an unheralded throw-in. At least by the fans. Maybe Jay saw something in him to where he knew he would a big part of the pen so early this year. Or maybe he took a big jump in development under Yeskie and is way ahead of schedule. No matter, we really needed him, and I'm not sure we knew it. At least us fans. Most of us, anyway.

RHP is a problem but I’m hoping with the overall talent of the staff they can pitch thru it.

Dutton is not a high leverage guy. Guidry is tried & true in big spots.

Ulloa looks good but his velo was already down from the 94-95 we saw in his first outing. And looking at the statcast info last night, his secondary pitch characteristics (slider) is just ok. But this isn’t the MLB. His stuff is still plenty useful, esp if he can throw strikes like the other guys can’t.

They need something from Little, Moffett & potentially Jaden Noot?

If Hurd gets pushed to the bullpen & thrives, that’d be huge too.

Ulloa hará que TD hable Español, y me encanta.

(Ulloa will make TD speak Spanish, and I love it.)

El Stoppo is pretty good.

I like Cool Hand Luke as well for Holman.

Ulloa jumped out to me in the spring during the last couple of sunday scrimmages. His stuff is plenty good enough for high leverage/end of game situations. Guidry and Ulloa appear to be the leading closer candidates early on.

Is this a contest thread to see how many times we can say “high leverage?”

I feel like this is a highly leveraged thread of extreme importance.

Milazzo said in his pod cast that Ulloa is one of the funniest teammates he's ever had, in the dugout & locker room. "he's ALWAYS ( his emphasis) happy.

What would you prefer it be called?

Mid game tight situations? Game changing innings?

His numbers in JUCO were pretty good but not dominating. Awesome scouting job and pickup by the staff
