Your anecdotal evidence doesn't change that one of their stated goals for the name change is to be seen as the flagship of their system.

The name change is an attempt to be seen as the flagship of the UL system, like LSU is to LSUE and LSUA.
I'm surprised the other schools haven't fought harder against it.
Probably because, by and large, they just don't care. ULM seems to like being ULM. The other schools like their names. No one is accidentally enrolling at or endowing ULL because they referred to themselves as UL or Louisiana.
Some LSU fans are supposedly offended on behalf of the other UL system schools. The irony is that their claim of no rivalry with any other in-state school gets thinner and thinner as they make such a big deal out of ULL naming themselves UL. The optimal plan would be to ignore UL Lafayette, proving that they are not a rival. Instead, people start thread after thread bashing UL and then jump into any UL thread in the More Sports Board, just to complain about the name issue.

Especially since at the time it started, they weren't even the biggest school in the system.

I cant' figure out why they are running from it. It's obviously an emotional decision.
It's obvious. ULL is a regional Tier 2 university. You need a HS diploma and a valid ID to get in.
The sports program wants to elevate itself beyond this. There are a lot of ULL fans who believe that LSU-ULL should be like Miss State-Ole Miss, Bama-Auburn, Florida-Florida State, etc. Were it not for big bad LSU and the corrupt LA legislature, they'd have their wish.
There's nothing wrong with wanting something better for your school but I think the name effort is awfully misguided and doesn't scratch the surface on the issues keeping them where they are.

A lot of folks in Louisiana don't want ULL representing the state given their current station both academically and athletically. Its embarrassing.

I personally thinks its hillarious. Thats why I bring it up. A school that is hell bent on them being referred to by a name that they dont even own the rights to all while broadcasters rarely do it the way they want it.
All while stuff like this happens.

Well, ESPN trolls them on purpose because ULL keeps challenging them.
I love it.

shouldn't the louisiana school with the better sports resume be crowned 'louisiana'?

Perhaps somebody here can answer this question:
Of the smaller La. colleges, wouldn't La. Tech have the better overall claim, in academics, athletics etc.?
I don't even like Tech, but seems they would come closer to being a 'rival', than ULL.

No one is close in terms of a "rivalry". Baseball has been intense lately. Much like Tulane was years ago. It's great for LSU and the state and the fans. Nothing wrong with that. Not a true rivalry though. And it will never be close to being School A vs. LSU... only so much as one sport is competitive for a few years at a time.

Yes, I agree none are close to being actual rivals, but why does ULL seem to think it has a better claim than the other "little guys"?
Particularly La. Tech who only makes noise the week before a game, then, having earned their humility and regained their sense of reality, they shut up.

LSU fans aren't offended. And, they aren't threatened. They are laughing at you. Certainly, you realize this.

I don't mind ULL having a passionate fan base and being biased and a little crazy. It's more fun that way. Especially when they get put in their place.

Certainly you haven't read the threads where they throw serious fits over UL.

I'm not throwing a fit, but the name makes no sense. I can call myself Kevin Spacey, but it doesn't mean I act in house of cards

Our boys outplayed LSU for 16 of the 18 innings.
Well, it's true. Take away the 3rd inning in the first game and the 8th in the second game and we are going to Omaha.
