Interim Administrator Rob Lyles has been on an employee termination spree since early this year. It makes no sense with the seemingly random targets. They usually hit on Thursday and Friday lately with a few each day. It looks like an effort to not raise a flag with media and labor boards. The guess is that the school is in financial ruin and they will repopulate the staff with cheap labor. So much for all of the praise given at the 2024 graduation for the stellar performance of that class. Someone needs to dig way deeper into the “direction” of the school. Looks like a death spiral where no one is safe. What are your thoughts?

Family member is personally affected by this and is devastated. Your guess about replacing with cheap is the same exact thing I’m hearing. Bad situation all around.

I’m on it.

This would never happen at the prestigious high schools like Episcopal and Catholic.

I don't know much about Uhigh. Isnt it a public magnet school? If so, its books should be open. Isn't it also a lab school? If so, it should have student teachers, that supplement faculty and make staffing less expensive. Lastly, how much less can teachers possibly be paid?

Is the tuition there really less than $6,000 a year? What type of school is this?

UHigh is more interested in scholarship athletes than the kids who made the school great. Multiple awesome families with 2-4 kids at the school have left for Dunham, Parkview, Catholic…

All so buy championships that no one respects. No one gives a shite about your transfers who are just there for sports.

UHigh lost itself. Whoever this guy is firing people is just trying to salvage what is left. UHigh is also a nuisance to the LSU campus. School should be half its current size.

Maybe they seem “random” because you were just fired?

Red flags for media and labor board? You do realize LSU audits U High and LSU gets audited by the state?

“Direction of the school”? What “direction” has been set since they fired Kevin George (director for the last 3-4 years) 3 months ago? Clearly the “direction” under Kevin George was not in alignment with the staff, parents, or Alumni - read the results of the survey sent out late last year.

Are they laying off instructional staff?

If they are laying off teachers mid year things must be really bad, like can’t make the next payroll bad.

I always assumed their finances were handled by LSU

If not instructional staff and they are laying off several each week, how overstaffed is the school???

The band director sucked and deserved to be let go. I'm puzzled by one of the teachers I heard was being let go, but I've not heard of any financial problems as the reasoning. The school fell off quickly under the previous regime but is making strides to get things back the way they should be.

ULS is public. It operates under a special district designation (same as Southern Lab), but it is public. They receive MFP and are required to administer LEAP testing.

My kids never went there but the school is good for the city. Lots of good families both white and black and more affordable than some of the others.. They need to get their shite together as I’ve known way to many families leaving and or talking about it for to be nothing..

I am a graduate of LSU who happened to student teach at U. High in the seventies; it was a great school. I do not understand how the school could be in financial trouble, because it is funded by the state and by East Baton Parish Public Schools. If this is true, then there should be a major investigation of the school.
