To be honest, the Coomes 3rd strike was called a ball several times that inning. Mainer & OM coach were giving that ump shite. His strike zone was extremely inconsistent all day

Both were understandable. Watson has never seen a strike grooved center cut to him on a hitters’ count with the bases loaded. He surely thought that was a breaking ball out of the zone and was stunned when it hit the glove. Coomes was called out on a pitch that was very clearly outside of ANY strike zone, but was 12” outside of this ump’s strike zone. And BTW, this was from a pitcher who had walked in a run two batters earlier. The rant would be calling for Coomes’ head had he swung at that pitch.

For anyone who has the slightest clue about baseball, it's simple: two strikes, you PROTECT - must swing at anything close. Cannot depend on ump to make the correct call and HOPE for a walk. Have a set and HIT THE F-ING BALL!
I like Watson and agree that Coomes is not an SEC caliber hitter. But a peewee leaguer knows you have to swing the bat with 2 strikes.

The lack of sense in this thread should surprise me, but it doesnt. It isnt about having a “set”. Its about making the most valuable decision. Watsons pitch was clearly one he should have protected. But no one wants to bash him because he has been good. Coomes made the right decision, that pitch was called a ball all day. Logic would lead you to believe it would be again. Also lol to those saying he cant hit in the sec. Do any of yall know his batting average in sec play throughout his career?

Swinging at balls not in the strike zone with two strikes does not lead to long term success. Anyone who has studied baseball even a little knows that

Sure if you enjoy watching ten hour games. The home plate ump was garbage, but it went both ways. Mainieri and Bianco were both riding his arse. The worst call was in the 8th, I believe, where he wasn't even paying attention and called ball four on the same play we threw the runner out trying to steal. Would've been a strike out with the runner out at second. Even Bill Franques was complaining about it.

Intlleigent posts are a rare on this thread. Most of the regular baseball fans on here get and agree with your post.

A home plate umpire would still be needed to call plays at the plate and whether a ball was tipped or if it was a swing and a miss.
But a computer would be consistent and it wouldn't delay the game at all.
It won't happen in college because of the cost but it's needed.

I understood what you're saying but the pitches Watson and coomes "watched" were with 2 strikes, bases loaded and down 1 run in the top of the ninth. you "have got" to protect the plate and the pitches weren't in the dirt they were just off the plate. They both did a poor job.

Agree with all of this. Though I don’t know why we view criticism as bashing or that you can’t criticize someone that’s been good? (Not saying you) but I thought it was a bad play by Watson he should have swung but that said it’s baseball no one is going to make the most valuable decision every time. Coomes was just a bad call

Talking about some of this yesterday, PM coaches so much by the book and by percentages that he makes his players more mechanical instead of instinctual and that's why we don't get the "clutch" plays as much as when skip was the coach. For the record, I think Manieri is a good coach, just think he needs to let players play more by instinct.

Strike 3 on Watson was a strike...period
He got fooled on the pitch or something cause he has to hit that pitch
Comes got screwed on a pitch that was a ball all day, but what about strike 1 & 2 ?

Yeah, no matter what, they had to swing. Have to be aware of game situation.
