Truth or Myth: The LSU offensive line has turned itself around

A blurb about the o-line from a truth or myth segment on The Athletic that I thought some would enjoy reading:
quote:
This was the biggest calling card for hiring Kelly, that he could develop offensive lines. LSU’s were a weakness under Ed Orgeron. Opening night against Florida State, it appeared that would understandably take time. The Seminoles sacked Daniels four times and created havoc.
So LSU made changes. It moved sophomore Garrett Dellinger to guard and Charles Turner to center. And two weeks later — out of injury necessity — LSU plugged in true freshman Emery Jones at right tackle. That meant LSU was starting true freshmen at both tackle spots in Jones and five-star left tackle Will Campbell. And it’s worked.
LSU doesn’t have a lot of depth, but it has six linemen it can trust. The depth issues are why, when LSU played Tennessee without Campbell and Dellinger (one of its best linemen), it got dominated for just 55 yards on 28 carries and consistent pressure on Daniels. But with Campbell back, the line thrived for nearly 5 yards a carry against Florida. Daniels had all day in the pocket. And it was even better against Ole Miss, with LSU rushing for 252 yards while Daniels could do whatever he wanted. And those two games were still without Dellinger.
Eight weeks of data in, LSU ranks No. 8 nationally in pressure rate allowed, per Sports Info Solutions. It ranks No. 10 in opportunity rate (think of this as ability to gain yards an offense is expected to gain) and No. 3 in stuff rate, meaning LSU’s line hasn’t been blown up at the line often. And those numbers include the poor performances against Florida State and Tennessee.
Dellinger is expected to return from his knee injury and play against Alabama, giving LSU more depth in a rotation that includes Miles Frazier and Anthony Bradford. This group has gone from a weakness to arguably a strength.
Verdict: Strength

I'd say that it's part cohesion with the current lineup that gets amplified with competent QB play. The run game sure has seemed to benefit.

Probably. Not clearly.
The left side collapsed like a Miami condo against the Vols.

With our starting left tackle out.

You were without arguably your best OL in Campbell that day, and lost Dellinger (who is arguably your second best OL, and was already playing through an injury) early. Tennessee was a herculean task with the way they rotate, losing those two just made it impossible.
I think the OL has really turned a corner. If we had been going up against poor DL's recently I would say wait and see, but they have performed good against two pretty solid DL's.

Can’t discount this. Saw it with Joe Burrow and watched it for years and years with Brees.

You might want to read the article before you post. It addresses the issues in the Tenn. game.

Its definitely gotten better as the season goes along. Its a combination of playing the right 5 and Daniels being able to throw teams out of the box early in games making the run game a lot better.

Every offensive position is improving as this season goes on! The WRs have improved, the TE blocking has really improved over the last 2 games because it was horrendous early in the season and the ball is coming out a lot quicker from the QB position. All this helps the OL but yes as many youngsters we have on the OL they will continue to improve as they play more.

Not much has been said about Turner, but him seemingly being able to hold up a Center has been a big boost. He's a guy that two coaching staffs have been trying to pass over since he arrived on campus. In 20-21 LSU played a Harvard transfer who had never been a Center ahead of Turner. This year the plan was to play Dellinger there...until that overall unit proved to be a mess.
IIRC, Turner has been at center since the Southern game and the line (except against Tennessee when injuries hit) has been getting better. Him stabilizing the center spot has allowed LSU to weather the storm of Dellinger's multiple injuries and may give the unit a boost because it will allow Dellinger to be in a guard rotation without having to have him isolated at center.
However, it goes without saying that the biggest reason for the improvement is two true freshmen being able to hold up (thus far) in SEC play. That's something no coach can 100% count on before the season.

We are 5-0 with the two freshmen and current line up when they are all healthy. 2023 class will ad debth and all 5 starters will be back next year. Great job CK.

They face their biggest test against Bama, but Auburn & Florida were a legit test and they passed.

Are ole miss and florida D-lines any good? I imagine we will find out how good our O-line really is against bama.

The line play has gotten better, but a quaterback who has gotten more confident in his decision making, and has the athletic ability of Daniels will cover a multitude of sins.

I'd say the line has stabilized, but I don't know that it's much above average.
Keep in mind, Daniels is a threat to run- so the defense has to try to account for that.
Yeah, Fla State got pressure and 4 sacks, but Daniels also scrambled for about 100 yds. I don't remember them making us punt or forcing a turnover, so "heavy pressure and havoc" wasn't a winning formula for them... it was the fact that our defense didn't stop them at all.
You factor in that our defense has improved and forces stops, and the other team now plays contain more.
Tennessee got some extra possessions and scored a good bit, so they didn't have to play contain- they weren't worried about us catching up on one drive.
tldr version: as long as we're in the game, defenses can't apply heavy pressure because of Daniels' mobility, which greatly aides the O Line. They are "good enough" at that point.

Go watch the first play from scrimmage against Ole Miss. The Oline blew them off the ball and made me take a step back.

That’s what it’s all about.

They are imposing their will at the end of the most recent games and that's the best sign you can see from an OL. When you can close out games by running the football and the other team isnt stopping you the OL is doing its job.
I think the question at this point is do you even put Dellinger back in with how well the OL has played without him. Bradford has done well. Also Dellinger wasnt even having a particularly great season himself.

Not only truth, but every starter on the O-line can be back next year, how frickin unbelievable would that be to get them all back next year.
