Yes. Absolutely. We almost won 10 games last year without a Top 3 defense.
Also, JJ and McElroy put up very similar stat lines, as we had similar dink and dunk offenses. So, see last year's Bama team of what you can do with a pedestrian offense and terrific defense. Admittedly, they also had a great running game. But that's the obvious ceiling with a limited pass game and a great defense: the national title.

JJ has to be able to sustain some drives. He's got to put a series of first downs together to keep the D off the field and score some points.
It doesn't matter how high your D is ranked, if they can't get off the field, they'll be exhausted by the 4th quarter and anyone can run over them.

You can havethe best defense in the nation but if your offense can't help you, then the defensive stats and moral will suffer.

Well McElroy is not that good. He is a national champion because he had an elite rushing game and defense.

To be a great team you need at least 1 big time skill position player.
And BTW great team doesn't equal national championship for example 2006 florida isn't a great team but 2008 USC is.

Don't think Chavis defense will ever be top 5 total defense, but possibly scoring D. I say yes. If the defense is stingy enough LSU can win 10 games.
The problem as I see it, this defense has no choice but to be ultra stingy.
