Well, last night’s win was sort of a story book finish to the end of LSU’s regular football season. Many had their concerns after we lost to Troy (myself included), but the staff and team did a good job of pulling together and along the way beat the team that beat #1 Alabama yesterday afternoon. Then the Aggies (Texas A & M or “aTm”) came to town last night and LSU beat them 45-21, while hanging about 601 net yards of total offense on its former defensive coordinator, John Chavis.
Danny Etling had one of his strongest nights ever. I know a lot of folks have discounted him, but folks real football is not like fantasy football. Your QB leads the team and manages the game. It is not always about a constant barrage of flying passes. However, while we are talking about passes, Etling only threw TWO interceptions the entire season. He has the third highest production in the SEC. He has been a hard worker and very tough throughout his stay, including playing last season on a numb leg which was corrected with back surgery in the off season. He may have not been flashy, but he sure as hell was effective, which is more than you can say for the carousel of QBs since Mettenburger as well as the QB before Mett. We still don’t know what was in the infamous “barn photos” that Jordan Jefferson was rumored to have on Les Miles. Jordan was not an SEC caliber QB, and certainly not pro material. I predicted that after LSU he would eventually wind up wearing one of two jumpsuits - either a prison or garbage collector/local truck driver jumpsuit. He ended up wearing both at one time or the other. A lot of folks screamed for Miles Brennan to start. However, the coaching staff in their wisdom decided that Brennan, while good, was not ready for SEC competition this year. It actually showed at times he was in. There was indecision and a couple of interceptions. Then again, it was not fair to throw the kid to the wolves just because a bunch of young fans wanted it. Instead, the coaching staff went with what they knew was proven. Maybe Danny wasn’t the most talented or flashy QB in the country, but he more than made up for it with his hard work and his ability to keep the team on the same page when the offense was on the field. That matters. If anything, we ought to be thanking Danny for stepping up and saving us from what had been a series of extremely mediocre QBs, most which transferred out, and still didn’t amount to much on the big stage in their new settings.
As for John Chavis, it is ironic that the team he used to coach for has beat the living hell out of him since he bolted for aTm. A lot of fans still remember Chavis talking on the phone with Sumlin during LSU pre-game warm ups at the Music City Bowl, which was trashy for both individuals. The called was actually verified by Sumlin’s pool boy, who Sumlin promptly fired thereafter. To boot, it became evident that Chavis’ heart was not in preparing his defense for the Music City Bowl that year and boy, did it show. We lost and his defense was much to blame for it. Then there was the legal mess between LSU and Chavis, which was recently settled out of court (according to sources, Chavis’ camp forked over $100,000 to LSU). Chavis had a buyout for leaving LSU and was still under contract to LSU when he was photographed recruiting for aTm and wearing aTm clothing, essentially working for them. After all the smoke cleared, it came down to that, and the Chavis camp decided to drop the countersuit and just cut its losses. Chavis exited in a less than classy manner and got what he deserved on the field and in the courtroom. If Sumlin is let go, I would be very surprised if Chavis gets another DC job at a Power 5 school.
As for Sumlin, I could not imagine the pressure cooker he has been in over the past year. He looked pretty beat down during last night’s post game press conference. Although it is not 100%, there is a strong chance he will be fired shortly. The Aggies have put right at a half billion dollars into stadium upgrades, and they are wanting a return on that investment. I am not sure if Sumlin is a Power 5 coach, but he can be successful at a mid major level school. For sure, he is not suited for the SEC. That said, he will have one hell of a golden financial parachute if aTm decides to cut bait. He probably needs to take a year off, decompress, and assess the last five or six years to learn from what happened.

As for Texas A & M, even though they have the deep pockets, they are really not a good fit for the SEC. When one considers things, A & M, TCU, SMU, Houston, Baylor, Arkansas and yes even Texas have not been the same on a consistent basis since the old Southwest Conference disbanded. Texas is primarily to blame for that implosion. Sure they got one Nat Title under Mack Brown some time back, but otherwise, really haven’t shown much. Arkansas is another team that has not been a good fit for SEC play when it comes to football. Those guys should really get back together and reform their old conference, but that is the logical thing and logic does not prevail that frequently in college football on those types of things. Everyone is out for the money grab. Same thing can be said for Missouri. Missouri will have a decent season here and there, but will join Vanderbilt as SEC doormats.
Now let’s go back to us and this season. What does it say about LSU to lose to Moo U, Troy, and Alabama, yet rise up to come back from a 20 pt deficit to beat the team (Auburn) that beat Alabama decidedly in yesterday’s Iron Bowl? We had a lot of attrition and injuries, and played 20+ freshmen, which was more than any other P5 school in the country. Over time, the coaching staff jelled, the HC starting finding himself, and the team grew up, got used to playing with each other, and the team chemistry improved. You can have a lot of talented folks on the field in any endeavor, but if they have to perform as a team, the chemistry is all important. You don’t have the luxury of prima donnas on a team. We saw a work in progress (still is) on every level get better every week. Next year is already promising.
There has been a lot of reaction over night as to Coach O’s statements about Matt Canada, and whether Canada will be back next year as OC. Canada jumps jobs a lot. Some attribute it to promotional opportunities, some hint that Canada has a consistent problem getting along with co-workers and team personnel, and some hint that all those frequent shifts get figured out after a season. For sure, what he schemed this year won’t work next year as it is not SEC caliber year in and year out. If Saban cracked his offense, others will eventually. Saban referred to the offense as being basic with the “eye candy” shifts. He’s probably right. If Canada leaves, there are others who will fill his shoes, and perhaps do a better job. Yes, Coach O mentioned Steve Ensminger and a number of the boards went into melt-down. However, that was as an interim should Canada leave before the bowl game. Keep in mind, Steve being a former QB himself, put up some pretty good numbers last year, and has been an OC at several other schools before coming back to LSU. In fact, the last time Texas A&M beat us, Steve was their OC. That said, last year Steve indicated that he was not interested in being an OC at this stage of his career due to the time commitment, which is understandable. However, who knows? A lot of things can change in the course of a year. Steve does think like a QB since he was one (remember David Woodley and him hanging 77 points on Rice in 1977? – final score was 77-0).
Darrius Guice was a class act last night. Even though he was the starting running back, he let Darrel Williams start in his place because Williams was a senior. Guice still got his 100+ yard game last night, and it is probably the last we will see of him as he is probably NFL bound, although damn, it would be interesting if he came back, but he is in all probability gone with the next NFL draft. Running backs have a short shelf life in the NFL. As a running back you can only take so many hits and need to get whatever money you can, while you can. But the kid has been a shining star for LSU, no doubt. The RB position will be ok next year with what we have on the bench as well as what we recruit this year.
That brings us to Coach O. A lot of folks melted when LSU made him the permanent HC. Everyone pointed to his failures at Ole Miss. Come on folks, if you are in any profession doing anything significant, you’re going to screw up at some point in your career, and that’s coming from someone who has enjoyed a pretty decent professional career and helped develop the careers of others, yet in the process of that I stepped on a few land mines early on. The pressure of my career is nothing compared to the pressure level of a major college head football coach, particularly with as fickle of a fan base as LSU has. What folks don’t look at is how Coach O learned from his mistakes and moved forward. Look at what he did as interim HC at Southern Cal. Be assured his success with that stint figured into his being made interim HC after Les Miles was let go. He changed the culture and kept the team together last year. With the exception of the ones he fired, most of his assistants hung with him. That says something about the man. Perhaps he is not the hero LSU wants, but for now he is the one they need. Make no mistake, he did well last year, and a 9-3 regular season is nothing to sneeze at. Notice how this past summer was a lot quieter in terms of players committing crimes and getting into legal trouble? Unlike Miles, Coach O seems to be a compassionate but firm disciplinarian. Coach O has demonstrated some flexibility when it came to doing what was best for the program. While Les Miles is a good man, we didn’t see that type of flexibility from him, and if anything, we saw his determination to do things his way even though he had promised offensive changes in the off-season, which never materialized and eventually got him fired. Finally, there’s Coach O’s excitement about being LSU’s HC. You always hear him end his interviews with “Go Tigers.” We have not seen that type of excitement in a HC of the LSU football program in my life time.
As of earlier today, LSU is now ranked 16th in the Coaches Poll. We’re waiting for the AP Poll later today, and the CFP Tuesday evening. We’re on pretty good footing at this point and will probably get a pretty good bowl. The recruiting class: maybe not the heroes we want but the ones we need. It might not be a top five recruiting class, but as long as it fills our needs that is what matters. There has been a many of high school super stud that looked phenomenal in high school, but was a bust for various reasons when they got to college. The ability to effectively evaluate talent is paramount. Miles didn’t always do good with that – particularly at the QB position.
Long story short, for the adversity we went through in the early part of the season, and those close to the program knowing that this was a rebuilding year and that depth on both lines was depleted due to some bad calls on the part of Miles, 9-3 was a good season, and with a bowl win we have a chance to be 10-3 and perhaps a top 10 finish. Time will tell on that. However, it is quite obvious that the program is on its way back up. Go Tigers!!!

Holy wall of text, Batman!
I'll give O credit for the team not quitting on the season after Troy.
But 9-3 and third in the West isn't good enough. If it were, we should have saved the buyout and kept Miles. It also doesn't prove he can make us great again. He fattened his record on tomato cans. Next year Auburn is on the road, UGA replaces UT in the rotation, FU has a competent coach, and the OOC schedule is tougher. We're not going to be able to start slow and pull away thanks to superior physical ability.

Never said we should accept this season's record on a consistent basis year to year. I would like to see us get back to where we once were,. But it sure as shite beats being 8-4 or 7-5.

You typed a lot of stuff to get to this one statement. And, no- it’s not obvious the program is on the way back up. Not at all. The argument could be made we lost 3 games in one of the weakest SEC seasons ever. O meddled and got his hand slapped by the AD and the resulting rift may cost him his OC after one year. This story is far from over.

Times like these really tic me off because I don't have more down votes. Maybe I can make it up in other threads.

On the way up? Hahahaha
Hell we had that for over a decade and 134 wins. Let that Coach go because 10 wins is not good enough.
Here's a refresher -
2005 11-2
2006 11-2
2007 12-2
2010 11-2
2011 13-1
2012 10-3
2013 10-3
2015 10-3 (McNeese included although cancelled)
Why is 10 wins on the way UP?
